It is with heavy hearts that we announce the passing of Marcus Ellison, a beloved husband, father, son, brother, teacher, and friend, who left this world peacefully at his home on March 12, 2026, following a prolonged illness. Born on June 5, 1978, in Greenville, South Carolina, Marcus brought light and joy into the lives of all who knew him. He was 47. Marcus was the cherished son of James and Eleanor Ellison and grew up in a home filled with love and laughter in Greenville. He is predeceased by his grandfather Harold Ellison, grandmother Margaret Ellison, and uncle Thomas Matthews. He leaves behind his devoted wife of 18 years, Dana Ellison, and their two children, Ethan, 15, and Lila, 12. He is also survived by his parents, James, 76, and Eleanor, 74, his younger sister Rebecca, 44, and older brother Michael, 50. A graduate of Greenville Senior High School in 1996, Marcus pursued his passion for history at the University of South Carolina, graduating with a Bachelor’s degree in History in 2000. Shortly after, he enlisted in the U.S. Army, where he served with distinction as a Logistics Officer at Fort Hood, Texas, until 2002. His time in the military honed his leadership and organizational skills, which became cornerstones of his teaching and coaching career. In 2002, Marcus began a new chapter as a high school history teacher and football coach at Ridgeview High School in Simpsonville, SC. For 24 years, he inspired countless students with his engaging lessons on U.S. and World History. As head football coach for 15 years, he led his teams to multiple regional championships, instilling in his players the values of teamwork, perseverance, and sportsmanship. Beyond the classroom and the football field, Marcus was a dedicated mentor who developed community programs, including a youth football summer camp and local history outreach events. Marcus was deeply involved in his community, evidenced by his 40-year membership at First Baptist Church in Simpsonville, where he participated in Bible study groups, youth programs, and community outreach projects. He was an active member of the Rotary Club of Simpsonville, a volunteer firefighter for 10 years, and a proud member of the American Legion, Greenville Post #27. His love for youth sports extended beyond his professional life, as he organized football leagues and mentored young athletes in the community. In his personal life, Marcus found joy in the simple pleasures. He was an avid fisherman, often sharing quiet mornings at local lakes with his children. His passion for gardening filled many neighbors’ tables with fresh vegetables, and his woodworking skills left a legacy of handcrafted furniture and birdhouses cherished by friends and family. A lifelong learner, he delighted in reading historical biographies, always eager to share his newfound knowledge with his students. Those who knew Marcus will remember him for his warmth, humor, and generosity. His quick wit and easygoing smile could brighten any room, and his ability to make everyone feel seen and valued was a gift to all who crossed his path. Marcus was patient, dependable, and encouraging—a natural mentor both in school and in the community. His kindness extended beyond words, as he was always ready to lend a hand, share his time, or support a cause he believed in. Marcus's family extends their heartfelt thanks to the staff at Prisma Health Baptist Hospital for their compassionate care during his illness. They also wish to express their gratitude to the faculty and coaches at Ridgeview High School, as well as the many neighbors and friends throughout Greenville County, for their unwavering support, friendship, and kindness. In accordance with his wishes, a private funeral ceremony will be held. Though Marcus is no longer with us, his spirit and legacy of kindness, integrity, and love will forever remain in our hearts. As his family lovingly states, "He lived with kindness, integrity, and a love for those around him. His memory will always remain in our hearts."
