Marcella E. Phelan

October 27, 1945 — June 18, 2026

It is with heavy hearts and profound gratitude for a life well-lived that we announce the passing of Marcella E. Phelan, a remarkable woman whose spirit touched so many, on June 18, 2026. Born on October 27, 1945, in Jersey City, New Jersey, Marcella was a beacon of warmth, love, and music to all who knew her. She was the cherished daughter of the late Herbert Ress, whose values and love helped shape her into the extraordinary person she became. Marcella graduated from Hasbrouck Heights High School and went on to earn her degree from Montclair State University, laying the foundation for a lifelong dedication to music and education. Her passion for nurturing young minds found a home in the Bergenfield Public School District, where she began her career teaching music education. Marcella's classrooms were not just spaces for learning; they were sanctuaries where creativity blossomed and students thrived under her gentle guidance. Her influence as an educator extended beyond academics, as she instilled in her students a love for music and an appreciation for the arts. Music was a cornerstone of Marcella's life, a passion she shared through her involvement with the Ridgewood Concert Band. Her dedication to the band was evident in every performance, where her joy of life resonated through each note. Her musical talents were rivaled only by her love for her bright and beautiful therapy dogs, who brought comfort and smiles to countless faces. Marcella was a devoted member of Corpus Christi in Hasbrouck Heights, where her faith guided her and her cherished friendships flourished. She was a woman of boundless kindness, always ready with a smile and a helping hand. Her joy of life was infectious, and her presence brought warmth and light to all who were fortunate enough to know her. She is survived by her beloved son, James, who was her pride and joy, carrying forward her legacy of kindness and love. While she leaves behind no grandchildren, her influence extends far beyond her immediate family, touching the lives of many through her teaching, her music, and her generous spirit. A service to honor and celebrate Marcella's life will be held at Costa Funeral Home. In lieu of flowers, the family kindly requests that donations be made to Hackensack Meridian, a cause close to Marcella's heart. Though our hearts ache with her passing, we are comforted by the rich memories and the indelible mark she left on our lives. Marcella E. Phelan will be dearly missed but never forgotten, as her melody continues to play on in the hearts of all who loved her.
