Manfred Earl Swartz

September 21, 1938 — September 12, 2026

It is with profound sadness that we announce the passing of Manfred Earl Swartz, who departed this life on September 12, 2026, at the age of 87. Born on September 21, 1938, in Oskaloosa, Iowa, Fred, as he was affectionately known, was the cherished son of Cleo Faye Versteg and Robert Swartz. Fred's journey through life was marked by a relentless pursuit of knowledge and an unwavering commitment to education. After graduating from Humeston High School in 1950, he went on to earn a Bachelor's degree in Education from Iowa State Teachers College, now known as the University of Northern Iowa. His academic pursuits did not end there; Fred furthered his education with a Master's degree from Ohio University in 1956 and ultimately achieved a PhD in Education from Michigan State University. Fred's professional life was distinguished by his long and dedicated service at Ferris State University, where he held the position of Director of Testing and Market Research. His contributions to educational assessments and market studies were profound, and his work impacted countless students and educators. On August 20, 1961, Fred married the love of his life, Rose Ann Sadler. Together, they shared 63 wonderful years of marriage before Rose Ann's passing in 2024. Their bond was a testament to love, endurance, and partnership. Together, they raised two children, Mark (Debbie) Swartz and Matt (Sonia) Swartz, and were blessed with a beloved granddaughter, Natalya Swartz. Fred was a man of many interests and passions. An avid cyclist, he participated in numerous Dalmac and Ragbrai tours and earned accolades in the Michigan Senior State Olympics and National Senior Olympics. Before embracing cycling, Fred was an enthusiastic runner and was a participant in the first nine years of the Old Kent River Bank 25k run. His love for the outdoors also extended to canoe racing, where he was a State Champion in 1978 and finished 12th in the National Canoe race that same year. A passionate advocate for the environment, Fred was a climate change lobbyist for the Sierra Club and frequently contributed op-ed pieces on the subject. His dedication to environmental causes was matched by his active participation in several organizations, including the National ACT Council, Lansing Area Agriculture Club, Natural Resources Club, and the Coopers Hawk Wine Club. Fred's hobbies also included woodworking and serving as the commissioner of Jim's Elite College Football Gambling Empire, where he found joy and camaraderie in sharing his love for the sport. In addition to his parents and beloved wife, Fred was predeceased by his brothers, Richard Swartz and Bobby Swartz. He leaves behind a legacy of love, wisdom, and dedication to family, friends, and the wider community. A service to honor and celebrate Fred's remarkable life will be held on October 23, 2026, at 11:00 AM at the Mayfair Restaurant. In lieu of flowers, the family kindly requests that donations be made to the Sierra Club in Fred's memory, to continue his legacy of environmental advocacy. Fred's life was a tapestry woven with love, intellect, and a profound commitment to making the world a better place. He will be dearly missed and fondly remembered by all who had the privilege of knowing him.
