In Loving Memory

Makwa Blackbird
November 3, 2009 — October 16, 2026
With heavy hearts and profound sadness, we announce the passing of Makwa Blackbird, a beloved son, brother, and friend, who left us on October 16, 2026. Born on November 3, 2009, in Canada, Makwa brought light and laughter to all who knew him.
From an early age, Makwa embraced life with a contagious enthusiasm. He attended Thomas A. Stewart Secondary School, where he was known for his quick smile and remarkable ability to bring joy to others. His laughter was a beacon, and his presence, a comfort.
Makwa was deeply connected to his cultural roots, participating actively in Grass Dance and Men’s Fancy Dance. He was a dedicated volunteer at the Curve Lake Health Centre, always seeking ways to give back to his community. His love for his heritage was evident in his passion for learning his ancestral language, a pursuit he cherished deeply.
A young man of many interests, Makwa adored hunting with his friends and family. His artistic spirit shone through in his love for dance and drawing, while his culinary talents made Friday dinners a cherished tradition. It was during these gatherings that Makwa's insistence on dessert became legendary, and his playful indignation if it was skipped brought smiles to all.
Makwa is predeceased by his loving grandfather, Maa’ingan, and grandmother, Memengwaa, whose spirits undoubtedly welcomed him with open arms. His family wishes to extend their heartfelt gratitude to the Peterborough Regional Health Centre for their compassionate care in Makwa’s final days.
In honoring Makwa's memory, donations can be made to Indigenous Vision, an organization close to his heart.
The family has chosen to celebrate Makwa's life with a private ceremony, cherishing the moments and memories that he has left behind. They ask that you remember Makwa with the warmth and love he shared with the world.
May Makwa Blackbird forever rest in peace, his spirit dancing freely in our hearts, his laughter echoing in the cherished memories of those who loved him.
