In Loving Memory of Mae Thompson August 10, 1951 - February 18, 2026 Mae Thompson, a beloved wife, mother, grandmother, sister, daughter and friend, peacefully departed this world on February 18, 2026, in the comforting presence of her cherished "three kings" — her husband, Emmitt, and her sons, Reginald and Dana. Though our hearts are heavy with her passing, we find solace in reflecting on the extraordinary life she lived and the indelible legacy she leaves behind. Mae was born on August 10, 1951, in Elgin, Texas, to the late Booker T. and Lucy Haywood. From her earliest days, Mae demonstrated a vivacious spirit and a heart full of love, qualities that she carried throughout her life. She was predeceased by her parents, her brothers Arthur Dean and Donald Ray Haywood, whose memory she cherished deeply. Mae's life was beautifully intertwined with that of her loving husband, Emmitt Thompson. The two first met in Austin, and in 1971, they embarked on a lifelong journey of love and partnership. Together, they built a family rich in warmth and laughter, welcoming their sons Dana and Reginald into a home filled with nurturing and joy. A proud graduate of L.C. Anderson High School, Mae pursued higher education with passion, earning her undergraduate degree in Sociology from Huston-Tillotson University, followed by a Master's degree from Prairie View A&M University. Her dedication to learning and helping others led her to a fulfilling career as a counselor at Austin Community College, where she was not only a beacon of support for students but also an integral part of various clubs and organizations. Mae's commitment to community extended beyond her professional life. She was a dedicated member of both Blacks Memorial Baptist Church and St. James Missionary Baptist Church in Austin, where she actively participated in church organizations and lent her voice to the choir. Her sisterhood with Delta Sigma Theta was another testament to her lifelong pledge to service and sisterhood. Mae was a creative soul, finding joy in quilting, crocheting, and crafting beautiful jewelry. Her hands were never idle, always creating something of beauty and warmth for those she loved. Her artistic spirit was matched by her resilient heart; Mae was a true "fighter," as those who knew her best would attest. Whether battling personal challenges or advocating fiercely for her loved ones, Mae's strength and determination were an inspiration to all. Mae is survived by her devoted husband, Emmitt, her loving sons Dana R. Thompson and Reginald Thompson, her beloved granddaughter Karter J. Thompson, her sister Shirley Haywood, and a host of nieces, nephews, cousins, and lifelong friends who cherished her deeply. A celebration of Mae's life will be held on February 28, 2026, at 11:00 AM at St. James Missionary Baptist Church, located at 3417 E. Martin Luther King Jr Blvd, Austin, Texas 78721. We invite all who knew and loved Mae to join us in honoring her memory and celebrating the love and light she brought into our lives. The Thompson family extends their heartfelt gratitude to everyone who offered their support and care during Mae's illness. We are especially thankful for the compassionate caregivers and the unwavering assistance from King Tears and St. James Missionary Baptist Church. Your kindness and love have been a source of comfort during this difficult time. Mae Thompson's legacy of love, resilience, and creativity will continue to inspire us all. As we bid farewell to a remarkable woman, we hold her memory in our hearts, grateful for the gift of having known and loved her.
