M. Arnold Chavez
March 22, 1945 — February 5, 2026
M. Arnold Chavez, a cherished husband, father, grandfather, brother, and friend, passed away peacefully at his home on February 5, 2026, at the age of 80, after a valiant battle with Alzheimer’s. Born on March 22, 1945, in the small but vibrant town of San Pedro, Colorado, Arnold was the beloved son of Moises and Pablita Chavez.
Arnold was a beacon of warmth and integrity, whose life was a testament to the power of education, service, and community. He graduated from Centennial High School in 1963 and pursued higher education with great determination, earning a Bachelor of Arts from Adams State University in 1970 and a Master’s Degree from Antioch College in 1972. His dedication to learning and growth left a lasting impression on all who knew him.
In September of 1966, Arnold embraced his call to service by joining the United States Army. He served honorably as a company armorer in Germany for 17 months, a period that instilled in him a profound sense of duty and resilience. Upon returning home, Arnold embarked on a career marked by dedication and impact. He was a pivotal part of the Teacher Corps Program at Sierra Grande School District and contributed to various programs and initiatives, including the Ford Leadership Development Program and the Consortium for Bilingual Education in Austin, Texas. His passion for education and community development led him to work with the Colorado Migrant Education Program and eventually the U.S. Government, where he served in roles within the Community Services, Small Business Administration, and U.S. Department of Education until his retirement in the summer of 2003.
Arnold married the love of his life, Theresa Lucero, on September 24, 1966, in San Luis, Colorado. Together, they shared 59 beautiful years, marked by deep love and unwavering commitment. Their union was blessed with three remarkable sons, Robert (Casey Bitting), Nolbert (Judy Montero), and Dominic (Silvia), who inherited their father’s values of kindness, strength, and perseverance.
A man of many passions, Arnold loved the great outdoors. Hunting and golf brought him much joy, and he was known for his love of hosting family reunions and barbeques, where laughter and love were always abundant. Arnold was a loyal friend, a devoted family man, and a pillar of strength to those fortunate enough to know him.
Arnold is survived by his beloved wife, Theresa, his sons and their partners, and his four cherished grandchildren: Hope Montero Chavez, Elyse Josephine (age 12), Mary Theresa (age 6), and Dominic Patricia (age 5). He joins in eternal rest his parents, Moises and Pablita, and his siblings, Adelmo Lovato, Felipe Abade Chavez, and Genevieve Gonzales, who predeceased him.
Arnold’s life will be celebrated on September 18, 2026, at St. Jude's Catholic Church. As we gather to honor his memory, we extend our heartfelt gratitude to the caregivers and medical staff from the Veteran’s Organization and UC Health for their unwavering support and compassion. We are also deeply thankful to our friends, family, and extended family for their kindness and support during this time.
Arnold Chavez leaves behind a legacy of love, service, and community. His spirit will continue to inspire and guide us, reminding us of the profound impact one individual can have on the world. Rest in peace, dear Arnold. You will forever be in our hearts.
