Luke Edward Smith

January 20, 1984 — July 14, 2026

Luke Edward Smith, a beloved husband, father, son, brother, uncle, and friend, peacefully passed away at home on July 14, 2026, after a long and courageous battle with cancer. He was 42 years old. Born on January 20, 1984, in Madison, Indiana, Luke's life was a testament to love, service, and dedication. Luke was the cherished son of Peggy LeGrand and Robert Lloyd Smith. He was predeceased by his dear sister Jennifer and brother Faron, yet his memory lives on through the countless lives he touched. He leaves behind his loving wife, Tricia, with whom he shared a beautiful life since their marriage on November 26, 2016. Together, they were blessed with three wonderful children: Rayne, Amelia, and Kaliegh, whom Luke adored beyond measure. A devoted family man, Luke is survived by his mother Peggy, father Robert, and stepmother Debbie. His sister Carrie and brothers Aaron and Josh will forever hold him in their hearts. He also leaves behind his stepbrothers Ethan with his wife Elli, and Kevin with his wife Ashleigh. Luke's legacy of warmth and kindness continues through his nieces Maddie, Jaylee, Emilee, Olive, Jacqueline, Evelyn, and Everleigh, and nephews Jace, Gus, Sam, Jace, and Greyson. Additionally, he is mourned by numerous aunts, uncles, cousins, and more friends than he would have ever claimed he deserved. Luke's journey began in the halls of South Ripley High School, from which he graduated in 2002. He pursued higher education at IU Columbus, earning a bachelor's degree that equipped him to contribute meaningfully to the world around him. His service in the Indiana Army National Guard spanned from 2002 to 2018, where he served with distinction as an infantryman and Cavalry Scout. His commitment to his country saw him complete two overseas tours in Afghanistan, and his skill and passion for shooting made him a revered Infantry instructor for the Indiana Guard. Luke's brothers-in-arms fondly remember his unwavering camaraderie and loyalty. An adept fix-it master, Luke had a knack for solving problems and helping others. Whether tinkering with gadgets, enjoying a day at the shooting range, or engaging in an impromptu barbecue, Luke's zest for life was contagious. His patriotism was equaled only by his devotion to his family and his brothers in service. As an active member of Servants of Christ Lutheran Church, Luke found a community that supported and cherished him as much as he did them. A celebration of Luke's life will be held on July 18, 2026, at Servants of Christ Lutheran Church, located at 7650 Oaklandon Road. Family, friends, and all those whose lives were touched by Luke's kindness and generosity are invited to join in honoring his memory. In lieu of flowers, the family kindly requests that donations be made in Luke's name to support cancer research or a charity close to your heart. Through these acts of kindness, Luke's spirit of helping others will continue to shine brightly in the world. While Luke's physical presence is no longer with us, his spirit and the love he gave freely to all will endure forever. May his soul find peace, and may his loved ones find comfort in the legacy of a life well-lived.
