Lucy Sherman, a beloved wife, mother, grandmother, great-grandmother, and cherished friend, peacefully departed this world on March 14, 2026, at the age of 89. She was surrounded by the warmth and love of her family in the comfort of her home. Born on December 14, 1936, in Salina, Kansas, Lucy lived a life rich in love, laughter, and service to others, leaving an indelible mark on all who had the privilege of knowing her.
Lucy was a woman of remarkable strength and compassion, whose presence brought joy and comfort to those around her. She was predeceased by her devoted husband, Clarence Smith, whom she married on June 15, 1981. Their union was a testament to enduring love and partnership, and together they created a family filled with warmth and kindness. Lucy was also preceded in death by her parents, Elmer and Paul, and her 12 brothers and sisters, whose memories she cherished throughout her life.
A dedicated mother, Lucy is survived by her loving children, Mary and her husband Robert, Laura, John and his wife Lisa, David, and Nora. Her unwavering support and encouragement were the foundation upon which her family flourished. She was a proud grandmother to four grandchildren, each of whom she adored and inspired with her wisdom and stories. Her legacy continues with her two great-grandchildren, who brought immense joy to her later years.
Lucy lived a fulfilling career at the phone company, where she worked diligently for 30 years. Her colleagues remember her as a dedicated and compassionate professional who approached each day with enthusiasm and dedication. Her commitment to service extended beyond her professional life, as she was a valued member of the Dutchess County Pistol Association and a passionate volunteer at the print shop at St. Francis Hospital for many years. Her contributions were a testament to her generous spirit and desire to give back to the community she loved so dearly.
In her leisure time, Lucy was an avid crafter and reader, finding solace and joy in creativity and the written word. Her home was filled with beautiful handmade crafts and a library of books that she shared with family and friends, sparking lively discussions and fostering a love for learning in those around her.
Lucy’s life was a tapestry woven with love, laughter, and service. She was a beacon of strength and kindness, whose legacy will continue to inspire those who knew her. Her warmth and compassion were felt by all, and her memory will forever be cherished.
A celebration of Lucy’s life will be held at a later date, where family and friends will gather to honor her remarkable journey. In lieu of flowers, the family kindly requests that donations be made in Lucy’s memory to St. Francis Hospital, where she spent many years volunteering and making a difference in the lives of others.
