Montgomery, Alabama - Lucille Davis Jenkins, affectionately known as Lucille, passed away peacefully on May 17, 2026, at the age of 92, after a courageous battle with cancer. Her passing marks the end of a remarkable life filled with love, resilience, and unwavering dedication to her family and community.
Born on December 30, 1933, in Montgomery, Alabama, Lucille was the cherished daughter of the late Elis Davis and Annie May Davis. From a young age, Lucille exhibited a tenacious spirit and a keen intellect, qualities that would guide her throughout her life.
Lucille received her early education at Saint Jude Catholic School and excelled at Carver High School, where she graduated at the top of her class. Her pursuit of knowledge led her to Alabama State University, where she earned a Master's degree in Early Childhood Development with a minor in English. Her passion for education was evident as she dedicated over 40 years of her life to teaching, nurturing the minds and hearts of countless children.
In November 1965, Lucille married the love of her life, Ernest Jenkins. Together, they raised two beautiful daughters, Tara Ann Jenkins and Tawandra Jenkins. Their marriage was a testament to enduring love and partnership, lasting 46 years until Ernest's passing.
Lucille's commitment to education was matched by her fervent dedication to civil rights activism. As a proud resident of Montgomery, she played an active role in ensuring that the voices of Black individuals were heard in the political arena. Her tireless volunteer work at voting booths was a testament to her belief in the power of democracy and equality.
Lucille was a devoted member of the First Baptist Church in downtown Montgomery, where she found solace and community. Her faith was a cornerstone of her life, providing her strength and guidance.
Known for her strong demeanor and unwavering will to fight for what she believed in, Lucille was also a nurturing soul. Her kitchen was always filled with the aroma of her delicious cooking, a testament to her love for her family and friends. She was the quintessential grandmother, the one everyone wished they had, and her legacy of love will forever be cherished by those who knew her.
Lucille is preceded in death by her beloved parents, Elis and Annie May Davis, her dear husband, Ernest Jenkins, and her cherished daughter, Tara Ann Davis. She is survived by a devoted family who will carry on her legacy: Carrie Davis, Ernest Jr. Davis, Tonya Gullet, Clinton Gullet, Tawandra Walker, Jesse Jr. Walker, Latoya Jones, Jasmine Shamane Jenkins, Jada Sad'e Walker, Jesse Roy, Jordan Michelle Walker, Rockie Jones, Clifton Jones, Tara Ann Jones, and Daren Jones. She leaves behind five grandchildren and four great-grandchildren, who brought immense joy to her life.
A celebration of Lucille's life will be held on May 22, 2026, at 11:00 AM at the First Baptist Church, located at 305 S Perry St, Montgomery, AL. Family and friends are invited to join in honoring a life well-lived.
In the words of her loving daughters, "We love you, Mom, and though we have to say goodnight for now, we will see each other again. Love you, rest well."
Lucille Davis Jenkins will be deeply missed, but her spirit and love will continue to inspire those who were fortunate enough to know her. May she rest in eternal peace.
