Joan J. Jacobs

Joan J. Jacobs lived a life centered on faith, family, hard work, and caring for those she loved. Joan graduated from Burke High School in 1966. She went on to build a career with the Department of Motor Vehicles (DMV), beginning her service as a clerk. Through her dedication and hard work, she was later promoted to a position as a Hearing Officer. After many years of service, Joan retired from the DMV. Retirement, however, did not mean slowing down for Joan. She devoted much of those years to caring for her beloved granddaughter, Jalynn. Joan was always active and on the move. You could often find her outside in the yard cutting the grass, planting flowers, and tending to her many plants. Working in her yard was something she truly enjoyed, and it was one of the ways she remained physically active. Joan deeply loved her husband and her family. She was truly a Proverbs 31 woman—devoted, hardworking, loving, and committed to her household. She was often the first one up and moving in the morning. Even as she entered the later stages of dementia, that familiar determination remained a part of her: up and moving, moving, moving. That was Joan. Joan was preceded in death by her grandparents; her mother, Pearl “Gunna” Gadsden; her father, Joseph Jenkins; her three brothers, Tanny, Hercules, and Joseph; and, lastly, her beloved husband, Macio S. Jacobs Sr. Joan leaves to cherish her precious memory her two children, Macio S. Jacobs Jr. and Dedra Loury; her granddaughter, Jalynn A. Jenkins; her great-granddaughter, Heaven Alexanderia Power; her sisters, Mary, Nadine, Robin, and Carmen; her brothers, Cubby and Angus Sr.; her sisters-in-love, Loretta and Vet; and a host of nieces, nephews, cousins, extended family members, and dear friends. Joan's life reflected the words of Proverbs 31:27–28: Her love, strength, devotion, and tireless care for her family will remain a treasured part of her legacy. Joan J. Jacobs was a wife, mother, grandmother, great-grandmother, sister, and friend whose presence will forever live in the hearts of those who loved her.
