Louis George Provost
February 19, 1937 — May 16, 2026
With heavy hearts, we announce the passing of Louis George Provost, a beloved husband, brother, uncle, grandfather, great-grandfather, and friend, who left us on May 16, 2026, at the age of 89. Louis was born on February 19, 1937, in the beautiful city of Burlington, Vermont, to Joseph and Alice Vincent-Provost. He was the cherished only son amidst five loving sisters, a dynamic that shaped his life profoundly and fostered his unique understanding and appreciation of women. He often bragged about having 5 sisters and how much he loved them. He was devoted, loyal friend and a mentor to many students.
Louis spent his formative years in Winooski, Vermont, where he graduated from Winooski High School in the class of 1955. His pursuit of knowledge led him to the University of Vermont, where he earned a Bachelor's degree in Education, specializing in English and French in 1959.In 1966 Louis was granted a sebatical where he went to school at Boston University for Learning Media Specialist degree. Upon completion he returned to Winooski to establish the learning media center.
Louis's career as an educator spanned over 30 years, during which he was a dedicated teacher and innovator. He began his teaching career at Winooski High School, where he taught English for five years. With a pioneering spirit, he established the learning media center in the Winooski School District, nurturing countless young minds and leaving an indelible mark on the community.
A proud veteran, Louis served in the Air National Guard. During one of initial training sessions, he was working with a partner to put out a fire when his partner panicked and left him to fight the blaze alone. He was able to fight through and free himself from the flames. This fight resulted in louis sustaining severe burns on his hands. Many procedures followed to restore and heal his hands. He continued to serve for 9 years.
On August 1, 1959, Louis married his soulmate, Marlene Sue Collins, in Montpelier, Vermont. Their union was a testament to love and partnership, spanning 67 beautiful years. Together, they built a family filled with love and laughter, welcoming 11 grandchildren and nine great-grandchildren into their lives.

A man of diverse interests, Louis loved the outdoors, whether he was tending to his garden, coaching sports, hiking, Lincoln Gap, cross country skiing or enjoying the serene beauty of the lake. He was a passionate mentor, original member of the Winooski JC's, and a lifelong parishioner at St. Francis Xavier Parish.
Louis will be remembered for his steadfast love, fairness, and generosity. He embodied the values of giving and community service, teaching those around him the importance of loving God and country and caring for one’s neighbor. As a boy he would climb to the top of Leclair st and go to the Richard farm where he would help milk the cows, load up the cart and attach the horses to deliver to families. He had a strong sense of work ethic and committment from a young age.
A service to celebrate Louis’s life will be held on June 20, 2026, at 9:30 AM at St. Francis Xavier Parish, located at 3 St. Peter Street, Winooski, VT 05404. Friends and family are invited to join in honoring his legacy and to share in the memories of a life beautifully lived.
Louis George Provost will be deeply missed but forever remembered by all who had the privilege of knowing him. His life was a testament to the power of love, education, and community, leaving a legacy that will continue to inspire generations to come.
