With heavy hearts, we announce the passing of Louis Edward Harris, who departed this world peacefully on June 4, 2026, at the age of 82. Louis left us after a brief illness at UNC Rex Hospital, surrounded by the love of his family and the kindness of dedicated caregivers.
Born on September 20, 1943, in the vibrant city of Raleigh, North Carolina, Louis was the cherished son of Mr. and Mrs. Oris Harris. He was nurtured by a large, loving family and shared his childhood with his sisters Martha, Marie, Minnie, Mildred, and brothers Oris Jr., Ardie, Alex, and Howard, all of whom have predeceased him. Louis embraced the values of love, compassion, and humility, qualities that defined his character throughout his life.
A proud graduate of Berry O'Kelly High School in 1962, Louis ventured north with two childhood friends to Newark, New Jersey, where he embarked on a successful career as a Construction Laborer. His dedication and hard work were evident until his retirement in 2004 when he returned to his beloved Raleigh, settling back into the community that held his heart.
On November 16, 1968, Louis married the love of his life, Catherine Armstrong, in a joyful ceremony in Newark, New Jersey. Together, they shared 58 years of unwavering love, companionship, and laughter, raising a beautiful daughter, Asha Harris. Louis's legacy of love continues through his cherished wife Catherine, his devoted daughter Asha, his sisters Catherine Lipscomb and Carolyn Ragland, and his sister-in-law Pauline Harris. He also leaves behind loving nephews, nieces, and a host of other family and friends who enriched his life and will carry forward his memory.
Louis was known for his quick wit and warm smile, always ready with a story to brighten the day. He found joy in the simple pleasures of life: casting his line as an avid fisherman, sharing tales of hunts past, tending to his lush vegetable garden, and relishing in the art of grilling. His generosity knew no bounds as he delighted in sharing his garden's bounty with neighbors and friends, a testament to his caring nature.
A service to celebrate Louis's extraordinary life will be held on June 13, 2026, at 12:00 PM at Bethlehem Baptist Church, located at 7215 Six Forks Road, Raleigh, NC. For those unable to attend in person, a livestream will be available at https://bbcraleigh.org.
The family wishes to extend their deepest gratitude to the compassionate staff at UNC Rex ICU and Fresenius Kidney Care Southwest Wake for their exceptional care and kindness. In honor of Louis, the family invites you to remember him with a smile and carry his spirit of generosity and joy forward in your own lives.
"Forever in our hearts," Louis's memory will remain a beacon of love and laughter, guiding us through the days ahead. May he rest in eternal peace.
