It is with heavy hearts that we announce the passing of Lorraine Powanda, a beloved mother, sister, grandmother, and friend, who left us on October 18, 2026. Lorraine was born on August 12, 1941, and lived a life full of warmth, laughter, and love. Lorraine was the cherished daughter of the late Raymond and Ann Fladzinski, and she was predeceased by them. She is survived by her devoted children, Lisa Higdon, her husband Rodney Higdon, and Peter Powanda, his wife Sandy Powanda. Lorraine was a proud grandmother to her two adored grandchildren. She also leaves behind her loving sibling, Shirley Waller and was predeceased by her brother, Raymond Fladzinski. Professionally, Lorraine dedicated many years as an Executive Secretary for The Port Authority of NY/NJ. Her work ethic and dedication were admired by all who had the pleasure of working with her. Lorraine balanced her career with her passions for cooking and spending quality time with her family and close friends. Her home was always filled with the aroma of her delicious meals and the sound of laughter, a testament to her love of bringing people together. Lorraine was known not only for her culinary skills but also for her kindness and quick wit. She had a unique ability to bring joy and laughter to any situation, and her sense of humor will be dearly missed by all who knew her. A service to honor Lorraine's life will be held at 11:00 AM at Tharp Funeral Home Chapel, located at 320 North Bridge Street, Bedford, VA 24523. For those who cannot attend, a video of the service will be available on the Tharp Funeral Home Website. In lieu of flowers, the Powanda family kindly requests that donations be made to Good Samaritan Hospice, an organization that provided compassionate care to Lorraine in her final days. The family extends their heartfelt gratitude to the hospice team for their exceptional support and kindness. Lorraine's legacy of love and laughter will forever be cherished by her family and friends. She touched the lives of many, and her spirit will continue to live on in the hearts of those who knew and loved her.
