Loretta Dawn Sugg Carter
March 24, 1939 — April 24, 2026
It is with profound sadness and heartfelt gratitude for a life well-lived that we announce the passing of Loretta Dawn Sugg Carter, a beloved mother, grandmother, and friend, who departed this earth peacefully in her sleep on April 24, 2026, at the age of 87. Born on March 24, 1939, in Winston-Salem, North Carolina, Loretta was the cherished daughter of Jap and Callie Sugg, who instilled in her a deep love and appreciation for family and community.
Loretta's life was a testament to kindness, dedication, and an unwavering love for others. Her nurturing spirit was evident in her 20-year career at Royal Cake, where she was known not just for her diligent work ethic but also for her warm smile and the genuine care she showed to her colleagues. Beyond her professional life, Loretta was a woman of many passions, each reflecting her joy in life's simple pleasures. She found serenity at the lake, where she spent countless hours fishing, a hobby that brought her immense peace and happiness.
A culinary artist in her own right, Loretta loved to cook, and her kitchen was a haven of delicious aromas and comforting meals. Her greatest joy was ensuring that those she loved were well-fed and content, a testament to her generous and caring nature. Her love for animals, especially dogs, was another significant aspect of her compassionate character, and she always had a special place in her heart for her four-legged companions.
Loretta is reunited in eternal peace with her beloved husband, Hyme McCarthy, her grandson Daniel Carter, and her dear siblings Duke Carter and Jewel Murray. Though their absence is deeply felt, the love and memories they shared will forever remain in the hearts of those who knew them.
Loretta leaves behind a legacy of love and resilience, cherished by her surviving family: her devoted children, Danny (Susan) Carter and David (Wendy) Carter; her beloved grandchildren, Lauren (John) Belcher, Claudia (Clayton) Russell, Sam Carter, Wyatt Carter, Brandy (Dalton) Scales, Mark (Elizabeth) Wilson, and Katie (Micah) Utt. Each carries forward a piece of her spirit, enriched by her wisdom and boundless love.
A celebration of Loretta's life will be held on April 29, 2026, at 11:00 AM at the Hayworth Miller Funeral Home, located at 3315 Silas Creek Pkwy, Winston-Salem, NC 27103. Family and friends are invited to gather and remember the remarkable woman who touched so many lives with her kindness and generosity.
In lieu of flowers, the family kindly requests that donations be made to a local animal shelter in Loretta's honor, reflecting her deep love for animals and her enduring legacy of compassion.
Loretta Dawn Sugg Carter will be dearly missed, but her spirit will live on in the hearts of all who were fortunate to know her. May she rest in eternal peace, surrounded by the love and warmth she so freely gave during her lifetime.
