It is with profound sadness that we announce the peaceful passing of our beloved Lola J Buie, who departed this world on January 23, 2026, at the age of 89. Lola was at her cherished home of 35 years, surrounded by the love of her family. Her incredible life journey began on June 8, 1936, in Norfolk, Virginia, born to the loving parents Lola Marie and Percell Leigh Johnson.
Lola was a beacon of wisdom and grace, whose love and dedication touched the lives of many. She was predeceased by her parents and her dear sister, Jessie Brown, and is survived by her devoted husband of 49 years, Arthur Buie. Lola and Arthur's journey together began on July 24, 1976, in San Diego, California. Together, they crafted a life rich with love, laughter, and a deep commitment to family and community.
She is lovingly remembered by her daughters, Vanessa Williams and Kim Buie Bey, and her brother, Percell Johnson. Her legacy is carried forward by her grandchildren, Alexander Thomas, Emadi Williams, Elan Williams, Steven Williams, and Elasia Williams, and her great-grandson, Adonis Orion Thomas. Each of them carries a piece of Lola’s spirit, her love of learning, and her dedication to others.
Lola's academic pursuits were driven by her passion for education. She graduated from Booker T Washington High School in 1952, and went on to earn her Bachelor's Degree from Virginia Union University in 1957. Her thirst for knowledge led her to achieve a Master’s Degree from United States International University, San Diego, California in 1973.
Her professional career was marked by her dedication to teaching and nurturing young minds. She began as a math teacher at Mission Bay High School and Lincoln High School, where she also served as a guidance counselor, touching countless lives and inspiring many to follow their dreams. Her career continued as she taught math at Grossmont College and San Diego City College. Her commitment to education culminated in her role with the California Teacher's Association, where she retired as the esteemed Executive Director of the East County Teachers Uniserv.
Lola was not only dedicated to her career but also to her community. She was a longtime member of Christ United Presbyterian Church, where she served with devotion as a deacon and sang with the choir, spreading joy through her voice. She was a proud member of the San Diego Chapter of the Carousels and Delta Sigma Theta Sorority, where she found lifelong friendships and opportunities to give back to her community.
Lola J Buie lived a life full of purpose and love, leaving an indelible mark on all who had the privilege of knowing her. Her warmth, kindness, and unwavering commitment to family and education will forever remain in our hearts.
A private ceremony will be held to honor Lola’s extraordinary life, as requested by the family. In lieu of flowers, the family asks that donations be made in Lola’s memory to Christ United Presbyterian Church or a charity of your choice that supports education and community service, reflecting her lifelong dedication to both.
While we mourn the loss of Lola, we celebrate the beautiful, impactful life she led and the legacy she leaves behind. Her spirit will forever be a guiding light in the lives of her family, friends, and all those who were fortunate to be touched by her kindness and wisdom.
May her soul rest in eternal peace.
