With heavy hearts but deep gratitude for a life richly lived, we announce the passing of Loiton Emanuel Mercer, who departed this world peacefully of natural causes on January 31, 2026, at the age of 80. Born on November 24, 1945, in Orange, New Jersey, Loiton was a beloved son of Benjamin Earl Mercer and Goldie Williams-Mercer. He shared this journey of life with his predeceased siblings, sister Beatrice Mercer and brother Benjamin Earl Mercer, whose memories he cherished dearly. Loiton's life was a tapestry woven with love, laughter, and dedication. On October 18, 1995, he united in blissful matrimony with Beverly Ann Middleton, and together, they crafted a beautiful life filled with devotion and mutual respect. Beverly survives him, along with their children, Lisa L. Levins of Riverdale, GA, and Loiton Dyrus Mercer of Newark, NJ, who continue to carry forward his legacy with grace and dignity. Loiton's sister, Diane Mercer-Knight of North Carolina, also remains, offering love and support to their family. A proud and loving grandfather, Loiton's eyes would light up at the mention of his six grandchildren and three great-grandchildren, who brought immeasurable joy into his life and whose futures he eagerly anticipated. For over two decades, Loiton worked as a skilled carpenter, a profession that not only defined his career but also his character. His work was a testament to his dedication, precision, and ability to build and shape the world around him. Beyond his professional life, Loiton was a valued member of the International Masons, where he found camaraderie and shared purpose. Loiton lived with a spirit that embraced life's simple pleasures. He loved to dance with the abandon of a joyful soul, listen to the timeless melodies of old school R & B music that spoke to his heart, and engage in spirited card games that reflected his playful yet competitive nature. Above all, he cherished the moments spent with his family, who were the center of his world. A celebration of Loiton Emanuel Mercer's life will take place on March 20, 2026, at 11:00 AM at the Abyssinian Baptist Church, located at 224 W Kinney Street, Newark, NJ 07103. Family, friends, and all who had the privilege of knowing him are invited to honor his memory and share in the warmth of his enduring legacy.
