Linda K. Burton, a woman whose life was a symphony of love, laughter, and learning, passed away peacefully on March 25, 2026. Born on June 13, 1945, in Detroit, Michigan, Linda was a beacon of warmth and joy, a true daughter of the city she cherished and served throughout her life.
Linda was the beloved daughter of Barbara Lee Hayes and Eugene Lumpkin, who instilled in her the values of compassion and resilience. She was preceded in death by her cherished siblings, Shirley Lumpkin, D'Arcie Lumpkin, Carolyn Young, and Irvin Lumpkin, whose memories she kept alive with her extraordinary gift for storytelling.
A devoted mother, Linda is survived by her son, Alton Hayes, who was the light of her life. She also leaves behind her treasured nieces and nephews, Danielle Threats, Deshonda Goodlow, Deana Hughes, D'Anthony Threats, Darian Threats, and Ava Pickerson, who will carry on her legacy of love and laughter. Though Linda did not have grandchildren or great-grandchildren, her nurturing spirit touched countless young lives.
Linda was a proud alumna of Lane University, where she earned her degree in Education, and Mary Grove College, where she completed her master's degree. Her passion for education led her to a fulfilling career with the Detroit Public School system, where she dedicated over 20 years to nurturing young minds. Even in retirement, her commitment to education never waned, as she selflessly tutored the disenfranchised at various homeless shelters across Metro Detroit, embodying the spirit of service and community.
Her love for life was contagious. Linda had a magical ability to bring people together, often through her love of food, music, and fun. Her gatherings were legendary, filled with warmth and laughter, and her home was always open to friends and family. Her adventurous spirit led her to travel widely, collecting stories and experiences that she shared with her unique flair and vivacity.
Linda was known for her outgoing personality and an undeniable zest for life. Her presence was the spark that brightened every room, and her laughter was the melody that set hearts dancing. She had an uncanny talent for recalling memories and weaving them into stories that captivated and united all who listened.
A service to celebrate Linda's life will be held on April 3, 2026, at 2:00 PM at Woodlawn Cemetery, Main Mausoleum, located at 19975 Woodward Ave, Detroit, MI 48203. The family extends heartfelt gratitude to the extended family and friends who have remained a part of Linda's journey through the years.
