Lillie Ruth Scales

October 14, 1932 — September 30, 2026

Lillie (Ruth) Scales, a beloved matriarch and cherished friend, peacefully left this world on September 30, 2026, at the age of 93. Born on October 14, 1932, in Brooksville, Mississippi, Lillie's journey was marked by resilience, love, and a commitment to family and community. Lillie was the beloved daughter of John and Mary Douglas, and grew up alongside her brothers, Luther (LC) and John (Beck) Douglas, all of whom have predeceased her. She shared her life with her loving husband, William Scales, whom she married on February 14, 1977. Together, they created a home filled with warmth and laughter, raising five children: Patricia (Cookie) McCoy (Lawrence -deceased), Anne Kinds, Sharon Carr, Jesse Carr (Jessica), and Karen Douglas (Jack). Though William was called home after 36 years of marriage, Lillie's love for him remained eternal. A bright student, Lillie attended Mississippi and Cleveland Public Schools. Her professional journey included years of dedicated service as a housekeeper at the Cleveland Clinic Omni International Hotel. Even after retirement, her industrious nature saw her cleaning offices and delivering phone books, always seeking ways to stay active and engaged. Her faith was a cornerstone of her life, and she spent two decades as an active member of Mt. Zion Church in Cleveland, Ohio, before continuing her spiritual journey with the Mt. Zion Church in Oakwood Village, Ohio. Lillie's vibrant spirit was best expressed through her passions; she loved cooking for her family, hosting lively parties, and dancing with joy and abandon. Known for her radiant smile and quick wit, Lillie had an uncanny ability to lift the spirits of those around her. She was famous for her playful threats of discipline with a switch, though she would never harm a fly. Her humor, sweet spirit, and generous heart endeared her to all, leaving an indelible mark on the hearts of everyone she met. She leaves behind a legacy of love, survived by her five children, nine grandchildren, 27 great-grandchildren, 19 great-great-grandchildren, a sister-n-law (Mercedes), and a host of nieces, nephews, and other relatives and friends. Her memory will forever be cherished by those who were fortunate enough to know her. Lillie Ruth Scales may have departed this life, but her spirit and the love she poured into her family and community will live on for generations to come.
