It is with a heavy heart yet a spirit of celebration that we announce the passing of our beloved Lillie Mae Henderson, who departed this world peacefully at home on May 31, 2026. Born on June 22, 1954, in the warm embrace of Nash County, Lillie's life was a testament to love, resilience, and the power of community.
Lillie was the cherished daughter of the late Guilford and Selma Williams, who instilled in her the values of kindness and compassion. She is predeceased by her beloved parents, her brother Sherman Andrew, and her husband, the love of her life, Nelson Henderson Sr., with whom she shared many blissful years.
A devoted mother, Lillie leaves behind a legacy of love through her children: Nelson "Boogie" Henderson (Stacey), Nakesha Henderson Leigh (Louis), Tandanysha Henderson, and Darius Henderson. Her family was her greatest treasure, and she found immense joy in nurturing and guiding them. Lillie's spirit lives on in her ten grandchildren and three great-grandchildren, who were the light of her life and the keepers of her stories and wisdom.
Lillie was a beloved sister to Selma Epps (Elroy) and Gloverteen Williams, sharing an unbreakable bond that was a constant source of strength and laughter. Her family was the foundation of her world, and she relished every moment spent in their company.
A woman of deep faith, Lillie was an active and faithful member of First Calvary Baptist Church in Rocky Mount, NC. Her church family was an extension of her own, and she served with a heart full of grace and generosity. Her commitment to her faith and community was unwavering, as she embodied the spirit of service and love.
Known for her big, beautiful smile and her ability to listen with empathy and understanding, Lillie was a genuine friend to many. She had a gift for making those around her feel heard and valued, always offering a shoulder to lean on or a word of encouragement.
Lillie's talents were manifold. She was a fabulous cook, whose kitchen was a place of warmth and nourishment. Her skills as a seamstress and DIY extraordinaire were admired by all who knew her; she could transform the ordinary into something extraordinary with her creative touch.
Though we mourn Lillie's passing, we also celebrate a life well-lived, a life that enriched all those who were fortunate enough to know her. Her legacy of love, kindness, and resilience will continue to inspire and guide us. As we say our final goodbyes, we hold close the memories of her laughter, her wisdom, and her unwavering love.
A celebration of Lillie's life will be held at First Calvary Baptist Church, where her spirit of warmth and compassion will be remembered. In lieu of flowers, the family kindly asks that donations be made to the church, to continue the work that was so dear to Lillie's heart.
In our hearts, Lillie Mae Henderson will forever remain, a beacon of love and joy, guiding us with her graceful spirit.
