Lillian Rebecca Black, a beloved matriarch and cherished friend to many, passed away on August 18, 2026, leaving behind a legacy of love, laughter, and compassion. Born on December 23, 1952, in Pittsburgh, Lillian was the daughter of Blanche Louise White and Alonzo McDowell. Her life was a tapestry woven with dedication, warmth, and a profound love for her family and community. Lillian's early years were spent in Pittsburgh, where she developed a passion for the arts, a love that would accompany her throughout her life. She began her working life at the famous movie theater at the New Granada in the Hill District during her high school years adn also exercise her entreprenual spirt in selling Avon cosmetics, Wicker housing supplies and home made meals on the porch of her apartment in wilkinsburg. Lilian desired more and thus began her 15 years at South side hospital as a respiratoryHer career path led her to become a respiratory technician at South Side Hospital, and later, she served as a beloved nanny for two decades. Lillian concluded her professional journey with a fulfilling career at the Veterans Hospital in Aspinwall. A devoted member of Bethany Baptist in her youth, Lillian found her spiritual home at Petra Ministries, where she remained an active and dedicated member for over 34 years. Her faith was a cornerstone of her life, and she expressed it through her love of music, dance, and the arts. Lillian's life was rich with interests and passions. She found joy in catching early morning matinees, indulging in her favorite television shows like "General Hospital," "Guiding Light," and "The Young and the Restless," and exploring her talent for paint-by-numbers. Her heart sang when she danced and praised the Lord, and she reveled in the cultural offerings of Pittsburgh, frequently visiting Heinz Hall, Bynum Theatre, and the Pittsburgh Playhouse. Family was Lillian's pride and joy. She leaves behind her loving daughters, Torie Black (Haley) and Marcia Black, as well as her adored grandchildren, Terrence Mims Jr., Nia Haley, and Kymora Haley. Her sisters, Lynn (Crider) McDowell, Valerie Easton, Christine Maynor, Rhonda White, Vanessa White, and Donna McDowell, along with Derrick White, will forever cherish her memory, as will her many nieces and nephews. Lillian's nurturing spirit extended beyond her immediate family; she was a band parent to over 200 students at Wilkinsburg High School from 1983 to 1987, mentoring countless young lives. She was predeceased by her beloved sisters, Donna McDowell and Karen McDowell, her mother, Blanche Louise White, and her stepfather, Harrison E. White. Lillian's absence will be deeply felt, yet her spirit lives on in the hearts of all who knew her. Lillian was renowned for her witty personality, warm embraces, and the joy she found in preparing home-cooked meals. Her quick wit and humor were matched only by her fierce loyalty to those she loved. She was always ready to lend a helping hand, embodying the very essence of community and kindness.
