Dave Brakefield
June 19, 1938 — July 5, 2026
Dave Brakefield, a beloved husband, father, grandfather, great-grandfather, brother, and friend, passed away peacefully on July 5, 2026, after a brief illness. Born on June 19, 1938, in Long Beach, California, Dave lived a life full of love, service, and adventure. He is remembered for his warmth, generosity, and the profound impact he had on everyone he met.
Dave was the cherished son of Lester Brakefield and Elizabeth Foster Brakefield, who preceded him in death, along with his brothers Larry, Scott, and William Brakefield. He is survived by his devoted wife of 68 years, Mary Virginia, with whom he shared a life filled with love and laughter. Together, they raised three wonderful children: Patricia Mitzel and her husband Scott, Michael Brakefield and his wife Kayla, and Robert Brakefield and his wife Kim. Dave was also the proud grandfather of seven grandchildren and seven great-grandchildren, who brought immense joy to his life. His sister, Barbara, also survives him, along with many cherished friends and extended family members.
Dave's life was marked by a distinguished career in service and technology. After earning his Bachelor's Degree in Computer Science from the University of West Florida, Dave dedicated twenty years to the U.S. Navy, rising to the rank of Chief Petty Officer. His military service, spanning from 1957 to 1977, was a testament to his dedication and leadership.
Following his Navy retirement, Dave embarked on a successful career in the burgeoning field of computer technology. He worked with Texas Instrument, Digital Equipment and Dell, where he excelled in both sales and training. Later in life, Dave pursued a new passion by earning a massage license from Lauterstein-Conway, becoming a massage therapist who delighted in helping others find relief and comfort.
Dave was an active and engaged member of his community. He participated enthusiastically in his neighborhood's HOA and was known for his dedication and service. His pursuits outside of work reflected his energetic nature and varied interests. A former avid volleyball player, Dave became an ardent fan of the University of Texas Women's volleyball team, rarely missing a home game. He also achieved the rank of brown belt in Judo and treasured his time spent outdoors, especially camping with friends. A lover of literature, Dave could often be found with the latest murder mystery novel in hand.
Above all, Dave was known for his BIG LOVE—a love that embraced everyone he encountered. He never met a stranger, and his kindness and open-hearted nature left an indelible mark on all who knew him. His legacy is one of love, laughter, and a life well-lived.
In lieu of flowers, the family suggests donations be made in Dave's memory to a charitable organization of your choice, reflecting his generous spirit and commitment to helping others.
Dave Brakefield's life was a testament to the power of love, service, and community. He will be deeply missed by all who had the privilege of knowing him, but his spirit will continue to inspire and uplift those he leaves behind.
