Leora Mae Hillman
February 19, 1929 — March 13, 2026
It is with heavy hearts yet deep gratitude for a life well-lived that we announce the passing of Leora Mae Hillman, beloved wife, mother, grandmother, great-grandmother, and friend. Leora departed this world peacefully on March 13, 2026, at the age of 97, surrounded by the love and warmth of her cherished family.
Born on February 19, 1929, in the small, close-knit community of Hospers, Iowa, Leora was the treasured daughter of Lawrence and Matilda. From a young age, she embodied the values of kindness and compassion, qualities that she carried with her throughout her lifetime.
Leora's journey of love began when she met her devoted husband, Gene, in Wilfred. The two shared a profound connection that blossomed into marriage on Valentine's Day, 1948. Together, they embarked on a journey that would span decades, beginning in South Dakota where they lived for 11 years, and then to Long Prairie, Minnesota, where they found their home and community for the next 10 years.
In 1968, Leora and Gene embarked on an entrepreneurial adventure that would become a cornerstone of their lives. They purchased The Dairy Way, a bustling local business that, due to its success, soon required expansion. This led to the creation of Gene-O's Family Restaurant, a beloved community gathering place that could seat 100 guests. For 25 years, Leora's warmth and hospitality were felt by all who visited, making the restaurant a treasured part of Long Prairie life.
Beyond her professional endeavors, Leora found joy in spending winters in the warmth of Arizona and Texas. These periods of respite with Gene were filled with love, laughter, and new friendships, further enriching the tapestry of her life.
Leora was a beacon of faith and a living testament to the love of Jesus, always placing others before herself with unmatched compassion and devotion. Her unwavering faith and selfless nature were a guiding light for her family, setting an example of love and service that will be cherished for generations to come.
Leora's legacy is beautifully reflected in her large and loving family, including her 18 grandchildren and 40 great-grandchildren, who will continue to carry her spirit forward in their hearts and actions.
A service to honor and celebrate the life of Leora Mae Hillman will be held on March 21, 2026, at 11:00 a.m. at the American Lutheran Church, located in Long Prairie, MN. As we gather to remember Leora, we will also celebrate the love and joy she brought into the lives of all who knew her.
The family would like to extend their heartfelt gratitude to all who have offered support and comfort during this time. In lieu of flowers, the family kindly asks that donations be made in Leora's name to a charity of one's choice, reflecting her lifelong dedication to helping others.
Leora Mae Hillman’s gentle spirit, unwavering faith, and boundless love have left an indelible mark on the hearts of all who knew her. While she will be deeply missed, the memory of her kindness and the warmth of her smile will forever be cherished.
