Leonard Wittig
February 2, 1952 — April 24, 2026
It is with heavy hearts and profound sadness that we announce the passing of Leonard Wittig, a beloved brother, uncle, colleague, and friend, who left us on April 24, 2026, at the age of 74. Leonard passed away peacefully in the hospital after a courageous battle with COPD and other health issues, surrounded by the love and care of his family and friends.
Born on February 2, 1952, in the quaint town of Melfort, Saskatchewan, Leonard was the cherished son of the late Aaron John and Albertena 'Tena' Wittig. He was the younger brother to his predeceased siblings, Gordon and Keith, and leaves behind his dear siblings, Kay and Lester, along with numerous nieces, nephews, and cousins who will forever hold his memory close to their hearts.
Leonard spent his formative years in Melfort, where he graduated from MUCC High School. His quest for knowledge led him to the University of Regina, where he honed his skills and passion, ultimately paving the way for a distinguished career. For three decades, Leonard dedicated his talents to Sasktel as an Electrical Engineer. His commitment to his work and his profession was further exemplified by his lifetime membership with the Association of Professional Engineers and Geoscientists (APEGS), where he made lasting contributions and friendships.
Beyond his professional life, Leonard had a rich tapestry of hobbies and interests that brought him immense joy. An avid collector, Leonard took great pride in his extensive collections of stamps, coins, and cards, but it was his passion for matchbooks that truly set his heart alight. His nimble fingers and keen mind found solace in puzzles and the meticulous craft of building model ships.
Hockey held a special place in Leonard’s heart. A loyal fan of the Toronto Maple Leafs, he also embraced the excitement and spirit of the Vegas Golden Knights, especially during his cherished time as a Las Vegas Snowbird. Whether cheering from the stands or the comfort of his home, Leonard's enthusiasm for the sport was infectious.
Leonard was known for his gentle demeanor and quiet nature, qualities that belied a sharp wit and a treasure trove of jokes that he shared with those fortunate enough to know him well. His routine visits to his favorite restaurants made him a familiar and friendly figure, always ready with a warm smile and polite conversation. His great great niece and nephews were the light of his life, their presence unveiling his boundless laughter and a heart full of love.
As we remember Leonard, we celebrate a life filled with laughter, dedication, and quiet strength. His legacy is one of kindness, humor, and unwavering love for his family and friends. Though he may have left this world, the memories he created will forever remain in the hearts of those who knew him.
A private family service will be held to honor Leonard’s life. In lieu of flowers, the family kindly requests donations be made to the Canadian Lung Association in his memory, a tribute to his enduring spirit and the fight against the illness that took him from us too soon.
Leonard Wittig will be dearly missed but never forgotten, as we hold his memory close, cherishing the gentle soul who touched our lives with his quiet grace and enduring love.
