Leona Marie SMITH

March 5, 1943 — October 12, 2026

Leona Marie Smith, a beacon of love and kindness, passed away peacefully on October 12, 2026, at Park Gardens assisted living. Born on March 5, 1943, in the quaint town of Pea Ridge, Arkansas, Leona spent her life spreading joy and warmth to everyone she encountered. Leona was the cherished daughter of Louis and Dorothy Arnold, who predeceased her, along with her beloved husband, Pius Smith, and her brothers, Henry and Olen Arnold. She also joins in eternal rest her nephew, Ole Arnold, her daughter-in-law, Gaylene Smith, and her longtime companion, Gordon Bakken. Leona is survived by her loving children, Randy Smith, Roger Smith, Tanya (Don) Smith, Ryan (Gaylene) Smith and Sister Bea Bixler. She was the proud grandmother to eight grandchildren—Kayla(Josh), Kristi(Isaak), Katie(Brian), Jessica, Anthony, Illana(Jake), Tanner, and Addisyn—and six great-grandchildren—Aivlee, Vince, Sylvie, Ellie, Emma, and Sutton. Her family was the light of her life, and she adored watching her children and grandchildren excel in their athletic pursuits. In 1970, Leona and her late husband, Pius, opened the Smith Group Home, where she dedicated herself to caring for mentally challenged individuals, retiring in 2014. Alongside this noble work, she found joy in waitressing and serving others, embodying a spirit of generosity and hospitality. Leona had a passion for family gatherings, where her love for cooking shone brightly. She was known for her hearty meals and famously declared that if you left her home hungry, it was your own fault. Her welcoming smile and loving hugs were a testament to her nurturing spirit, and she was always ready to help those in need, offering the shirt off her back without hesitation. A celebration of Leona's life will be held on October 29, 2026, visitation from 12pm-2pm and Celebration of Life to follow 2pm at the Furey Funeral Home in Frazee. In honor of Leona's giving nature, the family suggests that donations be made to a charity of your choice. Leona Marie Smith leaves behind a legacy of love, kindness, and selfless service. Her memory will forever be cherished by her family, friends, and all those whose lives she touched with her boundless generosity and compassion.
