December 31, 1942 — May 17, 2026

It is with profound sorrow and heartfelt gratitude for a life well-lived that the family of Leona "Lee" Sparks announces her peaceful passing on May 17, 2026, surrounded by her loving family in the comfort of their embrace. Born in the vibrant city of Long Beach, California, on December 31, 1942, Lee was a beacon of warmth and kindness, leaving an indelible mark on all who were fortunate to know her. Lee was the cherished daughter of Kenneth and OnaLee Johnson, who instilled in her the values of kindness, generosity, and hospitality that she carried throughout her life. Preceded in death by her beloved parents and two sons, Lee's legacy of love and resilience continues to shine brightly through her surviving family. In the summer of 1960, Lee sealed a lifelong partnership with her devoted husband, Gene Sparks, in Cortez. Their union, spanning an extraordinary 66 years, was a testament to enduring love and shared dreams. Together, they built a nurturing home and raised four children, nurturing their family with love, laughter, and countless cherished memories. A proud graduate of Montezuma Cortez High School's Class of 1960, Lee's education was just the beginning of her journey to touch lives. Known for her warm disposition and incredible hospitality, Lee's home was a sanctuary where everyone felt welcome. Her exquisite cooking was legendary, as were the evenings spent around her dinner table, where love was the main ingredient in every dish. Lee's kindness and generosity extended beyond her family, touching the lives of countless others in her community. Her compassionate spirit is fondly remembered and deeply missed by her husband, Gene; her daughters, Kelli and Jennifer; her seven cherished grandchildren: Hannah, Colter, Abby, Rylan, Reece, Brecken, and Max; and her great-grandchildren: Mason, Ada, and Charlotte, who will continue to carry forward her legacy of love. In honoring Lee's life, a private funeral ceremony will be held to celebrate her journey. In lieu of flowers, the family kindly requests that donations be made in Lee's memory to the Community Food Bank of Grand Junction, a cause dear to her heart, at https://communityfoodbankgj-bloom.kindful.com/. Additionally, contributions can be made to the memorial fund supporting the Roice-Hurst Humane Society at https://rhhumanesociety.org/donate/, reflecting Lee's lifelong love for animals. The family extends their deepest gratitude to all who have reached out with love and support during this time of sorrow. As we bid farewell to a remarkable woman, we take comfort in knowing that her spirit will forever illuminate our hearts and lives. Lee Sparks will be remembered for her unwavering love, her open heart, and the beautiful legacy she leaves behind.
