In Loving Memory

Leon L. Johnson
April 3, 1940 — June 23, 2026
With profound sorrow and a deep sense of gratitude for a life well-lived, we announce the passing of Leon Larry Johnson, a beloved husband, father, grandfather, great-grandfather, and friend. Leon departed this world peacefully on June 23, 2026, at the age of 86, leaving behind a legacy of love, service, and dedication.
Born on April 3, 1940, in the town of Polk, Nebraska, Leon was the cherished son of Elwyn and Adelia Johnson. He was predeceased by his beloved parents and siblings, Terry Johnson and Gail Johnson, and by his first wife, Linda Jane Johnson, whom he married in 1963. Together, they built a beautiful family, blessed with five children: Mary Porter (Mike Porter), Nancy Meyer, Judy Berna (Jeff Berna), Keith Johnson (Yvette Johnson), and Dale Johnson. After Jane’s passing, Leon found love again and married Eileen Helwig in 1997, with whom he shared 29 wonderful years. Eileen survives him, along with Leon's stepdaughters, Linda Brooks (Carl Brooks) and Sherri Hockett (Dave Hockett), and his numerous grandchildren and great-grandchildren, who brought immense joy to his life.
Leon’s educational journey began at Greeley High School in Colorado, where he graduated in 1957. He continued to shine on the basketball court at Colorado State College, attending on a scholarship and earning a BA in Education in 1961. His academic pursuits were complemented by his involvement in the Advanced Air Force ROTC, setting the stage for his service as a commissioned officer. In 1962, Leon entered active duty with the US Air Force as a 2nd Lieutenant, quickly rising to the rank of 1st Lieutenant in 1963. His technical prowess was evident when he graduated from Computer Maintenance School in 1964, a skill set he carried into civilian life after being released from active duty in 1967.
Leon’s career was marked by contributions to the field of computer systems analysis, beginning at the University of Missouri-Columbia in 1967. His passion for teaching and technology led him to the Columbia Area Career Center in 1979, where he inspired countless students. In 1986, Leon took on a pivotal role at the Harry S. Truman Veterans Hospital, working in User Support for national patient records until his retirement in 2004.
His faith was a cornerstone of his life, reflected in his over 30 years of active membership at Memorial Baptist Church, where he served as a Deacon from 1971. Later, Leon found a spiritual home at Christian Fellowship Church, where he also served for nearly 30 years.
Leon’s life was enriched by his hobbies and interests. He was passionate about computers, farming, and, most importantly, working with children. Alongside Jane, he opened his heart and home as a foster parent for nearly 20 years, nurturing many young lives. In his later years, he and Eileen cherished their time volunteering at the YMCA of the Rockies in Estes Park, creating fond memories together.
Known for his calm demeanor and an innate ability to converse with anyone, Leon’s presence was uplifting to all who knew him. His willingness to help, always accompanied by a kind word and a warm smile, was his special gift to the world.
A service to celebrate Leon’s extraordinary life will be held on July 8, 2026, at 11:00 a.m. at Christian Fellowship Church, located at 5045 Chapel Hill Road, Columbia, Missouri. There will be a visitation at the church from 10:00 am until 11:00 am. Family, friends, and all whose lives were touched by Leon are invited to gather in his memory.
In this time of loss, we find comfort in the love Leon shared with us and the indelible mark he leaves on our hearts. His legacy will be cherished and remembered by all who had the honor of knowing him.
