Born on June 17, 1943, in the tight-knit community of New Ulm, Minnesota, Leon was the beloved son of Alma (Stueber) and Norbert Lang. He was baptized and confirmed at St. Willobords in Gibbon. They have since welcomed him into their heavenly embrace, leaving behind a legacy of love and commitment that Leon carried forward. Leon began crafting his remarkable life in Winthrop, Minnesota, where he graduated from Winthrop High School in 1961. His journey took him down a path of service and dedication when he enlisted in the 205th Infantry in Mankato, Minnesota, in 1964. A man of honor, Leon was transferred in 1967 to the 452nd General Supply Co. in Winthrop. He was activated in 1968, bravely stepping forward to serve in Vietnam, where he held the rank of Specialist 5th Class, returning home in August 1969. Together, they built a foundation of love and resilience, welcoming four children into their lives: Patrick, Brent, Daniel, and Rebecca (Lang) Prokosch. Leon's family expanded with the joy of 12 grandchildren and one great-grandchild, each brought him immeasurable happiness and pride. Leon spent his career honing his skills and nurturing community connections, starting with S and H Mfg. and transitioning to Winthrop Imp. After serving his country, he worked for Conklin Auto as a mechanic before purchasing Malms Sales and Service in 1971, transforming it into Langs Sales and Service. For 45 years, Leon cultivated his business, creating a legacy of hard work and integrity, eventually moving it to his cherished farm in 2015, where he continued to work tirelessly, never fully retiring with over 55 years in business. A man deeply rooted in his faith and community, Leon served on the Regional Pastoral Council for the New Ulm Diocese and was an active member of St. Francis de Sales, where he served as an usher and money counter. His commitment to his fellow veterans was unwavering as a member of VFW Post 4078 and Legion Post 314 in Winthrop. He served as an Adjacent of the VFW Honor Guard and took on the roles of Secretary and Treasurer for the VFW, exemplifying leadership and dedication. Leon’s passions extended beyond his professional and community endeavors. He found solace in the great outdoors, enjoying deer hunting and fishing, and cherished time at his cabin in Emily, Minnesota. His heart was always full when surrounded by family, and he found immense joy in spending time with his children and grandchildren, making every moment count. Known for his quick wit, ever-present smile, and the uncanny ability to make everyone feel welcome and valued, Leon’s kindness and generosity touched countless lives.
