Leo Joseph Macko

Leo Joseph Macko, a cherished husband, father, grandfather, brother, and friend, passed away peacefully at his home on September 11, 2026, surrounded by the love of his family, after a courageous battle with heart disease. Born on May 23, 1941, in Danbury, Connecticut, Leo's life was a testament to warmth, dedication, and a profound joy in life’s simple pleasures. Leo was the beloved son of the late Leo Macko and Pauline Travaska, who instilled in him the values of kindness and compassion that he carried throughout his life. He was predeceased by his cherished parents, yet their legacy lived on in his generous spirit and unwavering commitment to his family and community. A proud alumnus of Danbury High School and Henry Abbott Technical School, Leo went on to serve his country with honor in the Army National Guard. His professional life was marked by his skill and precision as a machinist and tool and die maker, a career he pursued with enthusiasm and dedication. On February 4, 1978, Leo married the love of his life, Angelina Vaccaro, with whom he shared a deep and abiding partnership. Together, they built a beautiful family and a life filled with laughter and love. Leo is survived by his devoted children, Warren, Michael, Kristina, and Steven, who were his pride and joy. He was also the adored grandfather to six grandchildren: Warren Jr., Madalyn, John Cole, Samantha, Gianni, and Dante, each of whom held a special place in his heart. Leo cherished his role as a brother to his dear sister, Joan Macko, with whom he shared a lifetime of treasured memories. He was also an active and respected member of Our Lady Star of the Sea Catholic Church, where he found spiritual solace and community. In his leisure time, Leo was an enthusiast of drag racing, a pastime that thrilled him and connected him with fellow racing fans. He also found peace and joy in gardening, working meticulously with his hands to cultivate beauty in his surroundings. His love for model trains and painting reflected his creative spirit and meticulous attention to detail. Those who knew Leo will remember him for his engaging storytelling, his love of socializing, and the kindness that endeared him to all. A service to honor Leo's life will be held at Our Lady Star of the Sea Catholic Church, located at 1100 8th Ave. N, North Myrtle Beach, SC, on September 17, 2026. Family and friends are invited to gather and celebrate the life of a remarkable man who touched the hearts of many. In lieu of flowers, the family kindly requests that donations be made in Leo's memory to St. Jude Children's Research Hospital, an organization close to his heart for its compassionate mission and dedication to healing. Leo's generous spirit and enduring legacy will continue to inspire all who knew him, and he will be dearly missed but forever remembered with love.
