It is with heartfelt sorrow and reverent gratitude that we announce the passing of Lenton Banks Sr., a devoted father, loving husband, cherished grandfather, and esteemed community member, who left this world peacefully on April 7, 2026, at the age of 81. Born on December 12, 1944, in the bustling city of Philadelphia, Pennsylvania, Lenton was the beloved son of Lenton and Jean Banks, both of whom predeceased him. Raised in a nurturing home, Lenton developed a deep and abiding love for family, education, and community—a love that he would carry throughout his life. Lenton's academic journey began in the Philadelphia School District, where he excelled in his studies and demonstrated an early aptitude for learning. His pursuit of knowledge led him to the prestigious halls of Howard University, where he furthered his education and honed his skills in building engineering through various trade schools. This education laid the foundation for a diverse and impactful career that included roles in a steel mill, a clothing factory, and eventually, a significant tenure with the Philadelphia School District. Over the years, Lenton lent his expertise to 45 schools out of the 250 in the surrounding area, leaving an indelible mark on the educational landscape of his hometown. In 1986, Lenton joined in union with Jacqueline Walton, embarking on a journey of shared dreams and mutual support. Together, they nurtured a loving family that expanded to include children Jean Ivy Banks, Lenton Banks Jr., Leandro David Banks, Christina Blackmon, and Melinda Robinson, as well as two bonus children, Carleton and Aleta Robinson. His legacy of love and wisdom continues through his surviving grandchildren and great-grandchildren, who will forever cherish the memories they created with him. Lenton's devotion to his faith was unwavering. He accepted God into his life at an early age and was baptized at the age of 24 at the AME Church in North Philadelphia. His faith guided him in all aspects of life and was a source of strength and comfort to him and his family. He was a man of diverse interests, finding joy in collecting firearms, building model planes, and the calming thrill of driving in bad weather. Above all, he cherished time spent with family and a good TV show, where laughter and love were ever present. Lenton's formative years were profoundly influenced by his grandfather, a wise man who imparted life lessons during their cherished visits to the Mummers Parade. In addition, five influential men—Danny, Paul, Rueben, Griffin, and Cranston (his mentor)—further shaped Lenton into the man he became, instilling in him values of integrity, resilience, and kindness. As we remember Lenton Banks Sr., we celebrate a life well-lived, a life of service and love, of wisdom shared and lessons taught. His warmth, humor, and unwavering spirit will be deeply missed by all who had the privilege of knowing him. A memorial service to honor Lenton's life will be held at a later date, where family and friends will gather to pay tribute to a remarkable man whose legacy of love and faith will endure for generations to come.
