It is with profound sadness and deep respect that we announce the passing of Lena Rose Nelson Dooley, who departed this world on April 14, 2026, at the age of 83. Lena passed peacefully, surrounded by her loving family, after a brief health battle. Born on November 13, 1942, in the charming town of Hot Springs, Arkansas, Lena's life was a testament to love, faith, and unwavering kindness. Lena was the cherished daughter of Bennel Alden Nelson and Frances Annabel Brians, who predeceased her, along with her beloved sister, Shirley Jean Nelson. Lena was preceded in death by her devoted husband, James Allen Dooley, with whom she shared a remarkable 59-year marriage. Together, they built a life rich in love and faith, beginning their journey in Sweetwater, Texas, in 1964. Lena's legacy lives on through her family, who remain a testament to her nurturing spirit and unwavering love. She is survived by her brother, Dr. Brian Nelson, and his wife Mary Fran; her daughters, Marilyn Kaye VanZant and her husband Roger, and Jennifer Lynn Waldron and her husband Eric. Lena's loving spirit further extends to her grandchildren: Timothy VanZant and his wife Katy, Austin Waldron, Marissa Andrews and her husband Jac, and Amanda Eaton and her husband Wesley. Her great-grandchildren, Sebastian VanZant, Ava Stepper, Sophie Stepper, Grayson VanZant, Holden Andrews, Hudson Andrews, Everly Andrews, Emalyn Andrews, Calvin Eaton, Henry Eaton, and Oliver Eaton, will forever carry her spirit in their hearts. Lena's early career as an English and Drama teacher set the stage for a life dedicated to nurturing others. She later worked with companies such as Amway, Tupperware, Avon, Rubbermaid, and Weight Watchers. Once her daughters were grown, Lena pursued her passion for writing, crafting inspirational historical fiction that resonated with readers and earned her numerous accolades. She was a guiding light for aspiring authors, offering her wisdom and encouragement generously. A devout Christian, Lena was deeply committed to her faith communities. Her journey with her church family began at Fairmont Methodist Church in Abilene, continued at First United Methodist Church in Bedford, and ultimately at Gateway Church in Southlake, Texas. She served in various roles, from Sunday School teacher to choir singer, and was instrumental in writing and directing drama programs. Her missionary work extended her love and faith to South America, touching countless lives. Lena's talents were boundless—her skills in cooking, sewing, crocheting, and knitting were celebrated at local fairs, and many were blessed with her handmade gifts. Her home was a haven of warmth and hospitality, where everyone was welcome, and strangers quickly became friends. Lena's heart was open to all, and she relished mentoring young wives, mothers, and authors, offering spiritual and practical support. Lena's favorite Bible verse, Romans 8:28, embodied her approach to life: "And we know that all things work together for good to them that love God, for those who are called according to His purpose." Her life was a testament to this belief, as she lived with purpose and grace, touching the lives of all who knew her. Lena's family and friends will gather to celebrate her remarkable life, honoring her legacy of love, faith, and kindness. Her memory will continue to inspire and guide us, reminding us of the power of a life lived with purpose and love. In lieu of flowers, the family requests that donations be made to a charity of your choice in Lena's memory, as a way to continue her generous spirit. Lena Rose Nelson Dooley will be deeply missed but forever remembered in the hearts of all who were blessed to know her.
