Lelon Lavern Gill

April 20, 1947 — October 23, 2026

Lelon Lavern Gill, a beloved father, grandfather, great-grandfather, and friend to many, passed away peacefully on October 23, 2026, at the age of 79, after a courageous battle with throat cancer. Born on April 20, 1947, in Albany, Louisiana, Lavern touched the lives of everyone he met with his warmth, humor, and unwavering kindness. The son of the late Lelon and Florence (Pritchard) Gill, Lavern was raised in a household that valued family, laughter, and hard work. He shared a close bond with his siblings Mary Joyce Gill, Richard (Buddy) Gill, Dot Smiley, Sara Babin, and Ricky Gill, all of whom preceded him in death, along with his sister-in-law Mary Ann Cryer. Despite the many losses he faced, Lavern always cherished his family and held their memories dear. Lavern was a proud alumnus of Broadmoor High School in Baton Rouge, Louisiana. After graduating, he answered the call to serve his country, joining the U.S. Navy and serving honorably during the Vietnam War. His experiences in the Navy instilled in him a deep sense of duty and camaraderie, values that he carried with him throughout his life. Following his military service, Lavern embarked on a career that spanned both public service and business. He began as a fireman with the Baton Rouge Fire Department, where he demonstrated bravery and dedication to his community. Later, he transitioned into the world of insurance sales, where his natural charm and easygoing nature allowed him to forge lasting relationships with clients and colleagues alike. Lavern was a man who never met a stranger and was always ready to share a joke or a hearty laugh. His infectious humor and genuine interest in others made him a beloved figure in the community. He relished spending time with his family and was a doting father to his children, Shannon Dee Gill and Ricky Wayne Gill. His legacy continues through his cherished grandchildren, Blason Gill, Brandon Fogg, Glenn Gravois, Harper, and Noah Gill, and his great-grandchildren, Brynlee, Titus, Everlee, and Paislee Kate Gill. Lavern leaves behind a host of nieces and nephews. Lavern also held a special place in his heart for his godchildren, Darla Cryer and Dustin Landry. The family extends their heartfelt gratitude to the compassionate doctors and staff at St. Elizabeth Hospital and Carpenter's House for their exceptional care and support during Lavern's final days. A memorial service to celebrate Lavern's life will be held on November 21, 2026, at Ourso Funeral Home, located at 13533 Airline Highway in Gonzales, Louisiana. Family and friends are invited to gather, share stories, and honor a man who brought so much joy to the lives of others. In lieu of flowers, the family suggests memorial contributions to organizations supporting cancer research, reflecting Lavern's hope for a brighter future for others facing similar battles. Lavern Lavern Gill will be remembered for his bravery, generosity, and the laughter he brought to those around him. He leaves behind a legacy of love and joy that will continue to inspire all who knew him.
