Leland passed away peacefully, after courageously battling a lengthy illness. Born on May 15, 1925, in the humble town of Hodgenville, Kentucky, Leland was a beacon of kindness, strength, and love to all who knew him. Leland was the cherished son of the late Mayme L. Thurman and William M. Hawker. He was preceded in death by his parents, as well as his brother Dino, and his beloved sisters, JoAnn Thomas and Sandra Thomas. Despite these profound losses, Leland carried his family’s legacy forward through his unwavering devotion to those he held dear. A proud patriot, Leland honorably served his country in the United States Navy from 1943 to 1946, stationed in the serene landscapes of Hawaii. His time in service was marked by dedication and camaraderie, values he carried throughout his life. On September 5, 2008, Leland married the love of his life and his best friend, Tracy Thurman. Their union was a testament to enduring love and partnership, a shining example to all who witnessed it. He was the proud grandfather to 22 grandchildren and an adoring great-grandfather to 31 great-grandchildren, each of whom brought him immense joy and pride. Leland's interests were as diverse as his life was rich. He found peace in nature as an avid hunter and fisherman, and his passion for sports was unmatched. A dedicated fan of the University of Louisville Cardinals, Leland’s enthusiasm was infectious, often bringing together family and friends in spirited support of his favorite team. Beyond his personal passions, Leland was a steadfast pillar in his community. As an active member of the Lane Lincoln CME Church, he provided guidance and support, always ready with a helping hand or a word of encouragement.
