It is with heavy hearts that we announce the passing of Leland Thurman, a beloved husband, father, grandfather, great-grandfather, and friend, who departed this life peacefully on May 4, 2026, just shy of his 101st birthday. Leland was born on May 15, 1925, in the quaint town of Hodgenville, Kentucky, where he was the cherished son of Mayme L. Thurman and William M. Hawker. Leland’s life was a testament to dedication, love, and the strength of family bonds. He bravely served his country in the United States Navy from 1943 to 1946, stationed in the tranquil yet pivotal landscapes of Oahu, Hawaii, during a time that defined our nation’s history. His service was a proud chapter of his life, reflecting his unwavering commitment to the values he held dear. After his service, Leland returned to Kentucky, where his love for the great outdoors flourished. An avid hunter and fisherman, he found immense joy in nature’s embrace and shared many adventures with friends and family. Leland was also a passionate sports enthusiast, never missing a chance to cheer for his beloved University of Louisville Cardinals. Leland’s faith was a cornerstone of his life. He accepted Christ as his Lord and Savior at a tender age, and his spiritual journey was nurtured within the community of the Lincoln Lane Memorial CME Church. An active member until his health no longer permitted, Leland’s faith was a guiding light to all who knew him. Leland was blessed with a large and loving family. Preceded in death by his parents, his brothers Oliver "Pud" Thurman and Dino, his daughter Sandra, sister JoAnn Thomas, and Goddaughter Pamela Handley, his legacy is lovingly carried on by his devoted wife and best friend, Tracy, with whom he shared a beautiful life since their marriage on September 5, 2008. He is also survived by his cherished son, Leland E. Thurman, his sister Debbie Thomas, Godson Ronald Cox, and Goddaughter Olivia Cox-Mitchell. Leland’s heart and home were filled with the laughter and love of his 22 grandchildren and 32 great-grandchildren, each of whom brought him immense pride and joy. His family was his greatest treasure, and he dedicated his life to ensuring their happiness and well-being. Though his presence will be sorely missed, Leland’s spirit will forever remain in the hearts of those who knew him. His warm smile, gentle demeanor, and unwavering love left an indelible mark on all who had the privilege of crossing his path. As we say goodbye to this remarkable man, we find comfort in the countless memories he gifted us and the legacy of love and kindness he leaves behind. A celebration of Leland’s life will be held at Lincoln Lane Memorial CME Church, where friends and family will gather to honor and remember a life well-lived. In lieu of flowers, the family kindly requests that donations be made to the church in Leland’s memory, ensuring that his faith and love continue to inspire others. Rest in peace, dear Leland. You are loved beyond words and missed beyond measure.
