Leila Joan Smith
May 6, 1929 — March 5, 2026
With profound sadness yet a heart full of gratitude for a life well-lived, we announce the passing of Leila Joan Smith, who gracefully departed this world on March 5, 2026, at the age of 96. Born on May 6, 1929, in London, England, Leila brought warmth and laughter to all who knew her, leaving an indelible mark on the hearts of her family, friends, and community.
Leila was the beloved daughter of the late Doris and William Hastie and is predeceased by her sisters Maureen and Anne, her brother William, her cherished daughter-in-law Laurie Smith, her granddaughter Allison Smith, and her son-in-law Brian Cookshaw. She leaves behind a rich legacy in her surviving children: Freddie (Johanne), David (Janet), Susan, Andrew (Colleen), Peter, Karen (Terry), and Christine (Ron). Her family flourished across generations, blessed with 14 grandchildren and 16 great-grandchildren who will continue to carry her spirit forward.
In her early years, Leila left home at the tender age of 14 and embarked on a lifelong journey that began in a humble bakery. It was there that she honed her craft, developing the precious skill of making "Old Lady Pastry." Her pies, buns, tarts, and sausage rolls became legendary, feeding both the bodies and souls of all who had the pleasure of tasting them. Her talent was not just confined to her professional life; it was a gift she shared generously as a member of the "Holy Rollers," a devoted group of volunteer bakers at the Church of the Redeemer in Thessalon.
Leila's life was a tapestry woven with love, adventure, and resilience. She found joy in the simple pleasures of gardening, keeping her residence in immaculate condition for over 50 years. Even into her 90s, she could be seen tending to her garden or shoveling snow, embodying strength and independence. Her knitting skills were cherished by many, with her creations serving as warm reminders of her loving nature.
A woman of quiet strength and adventurous spirit, Leila embraced life's journeys with an open heart. Her travels took her across Canada and back to England, where she shared treasured moments with her sisters and niece, Stephanie. Her life was an inspiring testament to the power of love, family, and community.
Leila's family extends their deepest gratitude to the management and staff of West Wind Shores Villa Girls and Algoma Manor Tamerak, where she received loving care. Special thanks to Dr. Hopper and her staff, OH atHome, the Alzheimer's Society, and the CCAC for their unwavering support. The family is also thankful to the people and businesses of Thessalon for their kindness and care throughout Leila's long tenure in the community.
In accordance with her wishes, a private funeral ceremony will be held. In lieu of flowers, the family kindly requests donations be made to Algoma Manor, an organization close to Leila's heart.
Leila Joan Smith's life was a beautiful testament to the power of kindness, resilience, and grace. She leaves behind a world better for having been part of it, and she will be dearly missed but lovingly remembered by all whose lives she touched.
