Leah (Wheatley) Martin, a beacon of light and warmth, passed away on March 20, 2026, at the age of 35, after a courageous battle with cancer. Born in Washington, Indiana, on July 10, 1990, Leah was a cherished daughter to Jeanie Toledo and Lonnie Wheatley, and a beloved granddaughter to Ulysses Wheatley. Her life, though cut short, was filled with love, laughter, and an unwavering dedication to her family and community.
Leah developed a passion for helping others, a trait that would define her career and personal life. She graduated from Washington High School in 2008, and her journey towards making a difference in the world began. Leah's pursuit of higher education saw her attending Vincennes University for nursing, before continuing at Henderson Community College where she graduated with an associate's degree. Her determination and compassion led her to Murray State University, where she earned her bachelor's degree in social work, and eventually, she achieved a Master’s degree from the University of Southern Indiana.
While pursuing her education, Leah worked as a Certified Nursing Assistant, a testament to her commitment to care for others. After completing her studies, Leah found her calling as a therapist, providing support and guidance to those in need. Her colleagues and clients will remember her as a kind and attentive listener, always willing to lend a helping hand and offer her warm smile.
Leah's personal life was as vibrant and fulfilling as her professional one. She married, Seth Martin, on May 24, 2025, and became a stepmother to Emily, Blake, and Benjamin Martin. Leah was a devoted mother to her children, Gary Vanwinkle, Elektra Ross, and Luca Ross, who were her greatest pride and joy.
Her love for the outdoors was well-known; whether she was swimming, hiking, or camping, Leah found peace and happiness in nature. Her fondness for 90's R&B music and the poetry of Robert Blake revealed her artistic soul, while her infectious laughter and playful spirit made every moment spent with her one filled with joy. Leah's ability to light up the darkest rooms with her kindness and sweet nature made her beloved by all who knew her.
Leah is survived by, her children, stepchildren, her devoted parents, Jeanie Toledo and Lonnie Wheatley, her siblings, Malisha, Rebecca, and Amber, her husband Seth Martin,and many extended family members and friends who will miss her dearly. She was predeceased by her dear grandmother, Sharon Wheatley, whose memory she cherished deeply.
A celebration of Leah's life will be held on March 28, 2026, at 1:00 PM at the Otwell Community Center. The family extends their heartfelt gratitude to everyone who has offered support and kindness during this difficult time. In lieu of flowers, the family requests that donations be made in Leah’s memory to a charity dedicated to cancer research, honoring her legacy of care and compassion.
