It is with profound sadness and deep respect that we announce the passing of Lawrence "Larry" Mesbergen, a cherished husband, father, grandfather, great-grandfather, great-great grandfather and friend to many. Larry passed away peacefully on June 2, 2026, at the age of 101, leaving behind a legacy of love, dedication, and adventure. Born on October 14, 1924, in Zeeland, Michigan, Larry was the beloved son of John and Sena Mesbergen. He spent his early years in Zeeland, where he developed a strong sense of community and an enduring work ethic. Larry's formative years laid the foundation for a life defined by service, love, and a relentless curiosity about the world around him. A proud veteran, Larry served his country with honor in the United States Navy during World War II. As a Flight Engineer aboard a PBY Catalina aircraft, Larry bravely patrolled the Caribbean skies in search of enemy ships and submarines, embodying the courage and dedication that would characterize his entire life. Larry pursued higher education at Davenport University, graduating with a degree in Executive Accounting. This achievement led him to a distinguished career as a Tax Auditor for the State of Michigan. It was during an audit that Larry met his future wife, Anna Marie Sasak, sparking a romance that would flourish into 54 years of devoted partnership. Married on June 16, 1972, Larry and Anna Marie shared a life filled with warmth, laughter, and adventure. Larry was a man of many passions. He found solace and joy tending to his expansive garden, renowned for its luscious Ambrosia sweet corn and dazzling displays of Gladiolas, Dahlias, and Sunflowers. His love for the outdoors extended to fishing, golfing, and the camaraderie of his Brummel's bowling league. Larry cherished annual hunting and fishing trips with his brother John at their cabin in Curtis, Michigan, creating memories that would last a lifetime. Together with Anna Marie, Larry embraced a love for travel, exploring the world as members of the Friendship Force. Their journeys took them to far-off lands like Australia, New Zealand, Fiji, China, England, Germany, and Mexico, enriching their lives with new cultures and friendships. Larry is survived by his beloved wife, Anna Marie; his daughters Sally Lynn (Ron), Sue Kraai (Wayne), Cassie Andersen (Rich), and Mandy Boogaard. His In-Laws; Raymond Sasak Jr., Rose Lear (Bill), Susan Sasak (Tony), Timothy Sasak, Mary Ann Watters (Ron), Jerome Sasak, Ernest Sasak (Fran), Kathleen Motteler (Clint), Alex Sasak (Julie). He leaves behind a legacy of ten grandchildren: Joe Kuhn (Tonia), Kim Kuhn (Mike Schaendorf), Melissa Novotny, Jodie Chenlo, Jasmine Kinley (Jadon Foster), RayAnn Tryc (Jordan), Elliott Andersen, Trenton Boogaard, and Savanna Boogaard; as well as fifteen great-grandchildren and six great-great grandchildren who will carry forward his memory. Larry is predeceased by his parents, John and Sena Mesbergen, his brother John Mesbergen, an infant sister, Parents In-Law Raymond Sasak Sr. and Nora Sasak, sister-in-law Deb Sasak, and granddaughter Allison MacDonald. Though they are no longer with us, their spirits live on in the hearts of those who knew and loved them. A service to celebrate Larry's remarkable life will be held on June 8, 2026, with visitation at 1:00 PM and service following at 2:00 PM at Cook Funeral and Cremation Services, located at 2067 84th St., Byron Center, Michigan 49315. Visitation will also be held Sunday, June 7, 2026, from 6:00- 8:00 PM. The family extends their heartfelt gratitude to the staff at The Oaks in Jamestown, MI, as well as Elara Caring Hospice team for the compassionate care provided to Larry in his final days. Larry's legacy is one of unwavering love, adventure, and dedication. He touched the lives of all who knew him, leaving an indelible mark on the world. Rest in peace, dear Larry, forever in our hearts.
