Lawrence L. Shissler

Lawrence L. Shissler, affectionately known as Larry, passed away peacefully in his sleep on August 8, 2026, surrounded by the love of his three devoted children. Born on April 29, 1951, at Fort Benning in Augusta, Georgia, Larry was the cherished son of Elizabeth "Betty" and Harry "Punky" Shissler, both of whom predeceased him, along with his brother, David Shissler. Larry's journey through life was marked by a vibrant commitment to family, faith, and community. He leaves behind his beloved wife Alison, with whom he shared ten years of marriage, having wed on April 22, 2016, in the picturesque landscape of Colorado. Together, they made their home in Elk Grove Village, IL, where they shared a life filled with love and a strong connection to their faith. A proud graduate of Willowbrook High School in Villa Park, IL, Larry was a decorated three-sport athlete and a founding member of the Head Honchos, a male cheer group. He pursued higher education at the University of Wisconsin-Whitewater, where he played linebacker and earned a Bachelor's Degree in Social Work in 1973. His career began in social work at juvenile detention centers, but he soon transitioned to sales with both Schamberger Brothers and Euclid Beverage. He also worked at his family's tavern, Punky's Pub, in Lombard, IL. In 1992, Larry embarked on a successful 31-year career as a Nationwide Insurance Agent, serving the Downers Grove, IL and surrounding areas with dedication until his retirement in 2023. Larry was a cornerstone of his community, actively participating in Living Hope Church in Elk Grove Village, IL. His faith journey was enriched by a spiritual renaissance in July 2014, culminating in his baptism at Willow Creek Church in South Barrington, IL. He devoted himself to his faith, never missing a Sunday service, whether in-person or online. He served as a greeter and participated in every men's ministry event. His heart was also with military veterans, reflected in his ministry work that he shared with his wife Alison. He conveyed his genuine, heart-felt appreciation to every active and veteran service man and woman he encountered. An avid Chicago sports fan, Larry's enthusiasm for the Cubs, Bears, and Blackhawks was infectious. He was passionate about coaching youth sports, nurturing young athletes, including his three children in soccer, football, basketball and baseball across Villa Park, Lombard, and Glen Ellyn, IL. Larry also possessed a competitive spirit in card and board games. You better of brought your "A" game to the table as he played every hand or turn to win. Larry's legacy is carried forward by his sisters: Debbie (Liam) Quirke, Ginger (Marshall) Welch, and Jeanine Gray, by his children: Vince (Gretchen) Shissler, Nick (Megan) Shissler, and Jessica (Eddie) Wilging, by his grandchildren: Brandon, Teddy, Violet, Benson, Cameron, and Kaden, by his step-children: Leo Puzzo, Andrea (Mike) Perri, Joseph (Katty) Puzzo, and Ben (Lorena) Puzzo and his step-grandchildre: Olivia, Bruce, and Brianna. His exuberant personality, love for hospitality, and generous spirit touched all who knew him, as he opened his heart and home to family, friends, and newcomers alike. Larry also possessed a culinary acumen. Countless delicious meals were enjoyed by many family members, friends, and guests. In lieu of flowers, the family kindly requests donations be made to the Mighty Oaks Foundation in Montgomery, TX, in honor of Larry's life and his dedication to supporting military veterans. A celebration of life is being planned for October 2026. More details to follow on an exact date, time, and location. The Shissler family extends their deepest gratitude to the staff at Ascension Alexian Brothers Hospice in Elk Grove Village, IL. The compassion and care provided in Larry's final days were a testament to the profound impact of their work. Larry's life was a testament to love, faith, and generosity. He will be deeply missed, but his spirit and legacy will continue to inspire all who had the honor of knowing him.
