May 23, 1945 — July 2, 2026
It is with heavy hearts and profound gratitude for a life well-lived that we announce the passing of Larry Whiting Sr., who departed this world on July 2, 2026, at the age of 81. Born on May 23, 1945, in Pontiac, Michigan, Larry was the beloved son of Anthony B. Jr. and Mary A. Whiting, both of whom predeceased him, along with his sister, Linda, and baby brother, Elbert.
Larry's journey began in the close-knit community of Pontiac, where he graduated from Pontiac High School in 1964. Shortly thereafter, he answered the call to serve his country, enlisting in the Army and dedicating three years to military service. His commitment to duty was a testament to his character—brave, unwavering, and steadfast.
Upon returning home, Larry embarked on a career with U.S. Steel before finding his true calling as a firefighter with the Gary Fire Department in 1968. Rising through the ranks, his leadership and dedication led him to become a station chief, a position from which he retired with honor. Larry's service to his community was a reflection of his deep-seated values and his desire to protect and serve those around him.
Larry was a man who embraced life with passion and had a unique drive to see things done his way. Whether it was his love for collecting watches or his commitment to looking sharp, he was known for his distinctive style and strong-willed nature. While he could be quick-tempered, those who truly knew him cherished the love he gave so freely to those who loved him in return.
Larry's family was the center of his world. He leaves behind his devoted wife, Patricia Whiting, who stood by his side through life's seasons. Together, they built a family that includes their sons, Larry Jr. and Patrick, as well as Vience and Larry East, and their four children living overseas. His daughter, La'Tanya Hicks, and Angela, along with leaving a great legacy, came along with grandchildren, who will carry forward his legacy. Among them, Jalaid Whiting, who shared a special bond with his Grandad, will particularly cherish the memories they created together.
The family extends a heartfelt message: "Lord, I pray you make our hearts strong. May the love and the beautiful memories be with us forever. I believe my loved one is with your angels. Ease my pain with good memories. We thank you for the life we have spent together with Larry Whiting SR.
In honor of Larry Whiting SR his life and his memory, Larry will forever be etched in the hearts of those who loved him, and he will be deeply missed by all who had the privilege of knowing him. May he rest in peace, surrounded by the love of his family and the grace of angels.
