January 11, 2026 — April 21, 2026

It is with profound sadness and a deep sense of gratitude for a life well-lived that we announce the passing of Larry Allen Childress, who peacefully departed this world on April 21, 2026, in the comforting presence of his beloved daughter Lisa and cherished grandson Tielyr. Larry's journey began on January 11, 1948, in Alameda, California, a place that would lay the foundations for a life marked by dedication, love, and service. Larry was the beloved son of Gordon Childress and Ida Beatrice Smith, both of whom preceded him in death, along with his brother Donald "Greg" Childress and his son Donald Childress who also preceded him. He leaves behind his oldest brother Gary Childress. Larry carried the legacy of his family with him, embodying the values they instilled in him throughout his life. A proud alumnus of Bakersfield High School's class of 1966, Larry's quest for knowledge led him to further his education at Bakersfield College, where he obtained an Associate of Arts degree in Business. Before pursuing his career, Larry answered the call of duty, serving honorably in the U.S. Army from March 27, 1968, to March 26, 1970, during the Vietnam War. His bravery and commitment were recognized with numerous accolades, including the Army Commendation Medal with "V" device, National Defense Service Medal, Vietnam Service Medal, Vietnam Campaign Medal, and the Combat Infantryman Badge. Larry's professional journey was as steadfast as his character. He dedicated over 47 years to the steel fabrication industry, beginning at Hoppers of Bakersfield, CA, and later flourishing at Kern Steel Fabrication Inc. as a Certified Welding Inspector and Quality Control professional. His work ethic and integrity earned him the respect and admiration of colleagues and the Champness family, with whom he highly respected and he cherished a remarkable 20+ year career. Beyond his professional achievements, Larry was a man of many passions. He was an avid fisherman, a marksman who loved the great outdoors, an APA pool champion, Lottery scratcher king, and a competative baseball coach, . His hands were never idle, always fixing or welding something, reflecting his boundless energy and creativity. Larry was known for his quick wit, a warm smile that could light up any room, and a seemingly endless repertoire of jokes and stories. Whether recounting tales from his Vietnam days or reminiscing about childhood adventures on his family's bee farm, Larry's storytelling was legendary. Above all, Larry was a devoted family man. He was the best father to his "favorite" daughter Lisa, a title she lovingly held as his only daughter, and to his sons Michael, Matthew, and Steven. His role as "World's Greatest Papa" was a badge of honor, cherished by his grandchildren Alex, Matthew, Christopher, Manny, Tielyr, Legend, and his great-granddaughter Ny'Lani, affectionately known as his "Cutie Pie." Larry's life was a testament to integrity, character, and selflessness. His legacy of love is unmatched, and his presence will forever be missed by all who knew him. A service celebrating Larry's life will be held on May 27, 2026, at 12:15 PM at the National Cemetery. The family extends a special message, inspired by Philippians 4:8, reminding us all to think on things that are true, honest, just, pure, lovely, and of good report, as these were the virtues that Larry embodied throughout his life. Larry Allen Childress leaves behind a wealth of fond memories and an indelible mark on the hearts of those fortunate enough to have known him. May he rest in eternal peace, surrounded by love and light.
