Kimberly Ann Kelly
February 10, 1961 — March 28, 2026
With heavy hearts, we announce the passing of Kimberly Ann Kelly, a beloved mother, sister, grandmother, and friend, who left this world peacefully on March 28, 2026, at the age of 65. She was known as Kim, Kimberly, Mom, Mawmaw and Mootlock. Her warm spirit and joyous laughter will be dearly missed by all who had the fortune to know her.
Born on February 10, 1961, in Portsmouth, Virginia, Kimberly was the cherished daughter of the late Charles L. Kelly Jr. and Judith Charlton Kelly. She carried forward their legacy of kindness and love, traits she effortlessly embodied throughout her life. Kimberly grew up in Portsmouth, where she graduated from Norcom High School in 1980, forming friendships that would last a lifetime.
Kimberly dedicated over 30 years of her life to serving the children of Portsmouth as a cafeteria worker in the public school system. Her dedication to her work and her community was unmatched, and she retired in 2025, leaving behind a legacy of countless students whose lives were brightened by her smile and care.
Her family was the center of her universe, and she was a devoted mother to her children, David K. Kerner Jr. and his wife, Amy L. Kerner, and Kelly E. Jefferson and her husband, Edward L. Jefferson Jr. She was the proud and loving grandmother of Adilyn E. Jefferson and Judy L. Jefferson, who brought her boundless joy and laughter. Kimberly's siblings, Catherine K. Merritt, Lisa M. Howard, and Charles L. Kelly III, will forever hold her memory close to their hearts.
Kimberly was known for her great sense of humor and a magnetic personality that ensured she never met a stranger. Her laughter was infectious, and her kindness boundless, making her beloved by all who crossed her path. She found simple pleasures in life, such as sitting outside, listening to the birds, and cherishing the moments spent with her family. Her home was filled with warmth and love, a testament to the life she led.
As we remember Kimberly, we celebrate a life filled with laughter, love, and compassion. A memorial service will be held to honor her memory, where family and friends will gather to share stories and memories of a woman who touched so many lives. Details of the service will be announced in the coming days.
In lieu of flowers, the family kindly requests donations be made in Kimberly’s memory to a charity of your choice, reflecting her spirit of generosity and kindness.
Though Kimberly Ann Kelly is no longer with us, her spirit will continue to dwell in the hearts of those who loved her. May she rest in peace, surrounded by the same love and joy she so freely gave in life.
