In Loving Memory

Kent Courtney Kjelstrom
October 17, 1948 — October 14, 2026
Kent Courtney Kjelstrom, a beloved husband, father, grandfather, brother, and friend, passed away peacefully at his home in Sacramento, California, on October 14, 2026, just three days shy of his 78th birthday. Born on October 17, 1948, in Rugby, North Dakota, to Edwin and Leona (Myrhe) Kjelstrom, Kent was a man whose life was marked by service, dedication, and love.
Kent's journey began in Rugby, where he graduated from Rugby High School in 1966. Known for his athletic prowess, he excelled in track & field, baseball, and football, and was also a brilliant member of the debate team. His talents earned him a football scholarship to the University of North Dakota, where he graduated in 1970 with a Bachelor’s degree. During his college years, he joined ROTC, and upon graduation, he enlisted in the United States Air Force, where he embarked on a distinguished 20-year career, serving his country with honor and bravery.
Kent's military service was a testament to his courage and dedication. He was deployed to Vietnam in 1971, where his exceptional skills earned him the Distinguished Flying Cross. Over the years, he served in various roles, including Chief of Flying Safety at Mather AFB, Public Information Officer for MAC at Scott AFB, and with the Air Rescue Unit at McClellan AFB. He retired as a Major in 1990, having made a lasting impact on those he served with.
In 1972, Kent married the love of his life, Judith Ann Chapin, at the Newman Center in Sacramento. Their marriage was a beautiful union that spanned 54 years, blessed with two wonderful daughters, Erika Dionne and Andrea Nicole, and a cherished grandson, Tristan Kent Louis. Kent's family was his pride and joy, and he was a devoted husband and father who took immense pleasure in creating a loving home filled with warmth, laughter, and music.
After retiring from the Air Force, Kent continued his commitment to service by working with the State of California's EDD-Veterans Program for over 20 years, retiring in 2015. He was deeply committed to supporting veterans, particularly through the Stand Down event in Sacramento.
Kent was an active member of St. Francis of Assisi Parish, where he shared his beautiful singing voice with the choir for nearly two decades. His passion for music was matched only by his love for cooking, gardening, and his family. A talented chef, Kent prepared every dinner and holiday meal, infusing his dishes with love and care. He also had a fondness for running, golfing, and playing the guitar.
His personal qualities left an indelible mark on all who knew him. Known for his dry Swedish wit, Kent was a kind, humble, and generous man. His quiet strength and ethical nature made him a great listener, and his words were always thoughtful and wise.
Kent is survived by his beloved wife, Judith Ann; his daughters, Erika Dionne and Andrea Nicole; his grandson, Tristan Kent Louis; and his brother, Kerwin Jerome. He was predeceased by his parents, Edwin and Leona Kjelstrom.
A celebration of Kent's life will be held on January 16, 2027, as family and friends gather to honor a life well-lived. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to Sacramento Loaves and Fishes, an organization that was close to Kent's heart.
The family extends their heartfelt gratitude to the UC Davis Health specialists, hospice care team, and volunteers, as well as many friends who offered support over the past two months. Special thanks go out to Erika, Jeff, Miguel, John and Mary, and Fr. Amer from St. Francis of Assisi Parish.
Kent's legacy of love, service, and kindness will live on in the hearts of those who had the privilege of knowing him. As he would often say, "All shall be well..."
