December 15, 1950 — April 14, 2026
Kenneth "Kenny" Sheffield, a beloved husband, father, grandfather, and friend, passed away suddenly on April 14, 2026, at Piedmont Henry Hospital. Born on December 15, 1950, in Newark, New Jersey, Kenny lived a life rich in love, music, and dedication, leaving behind a legacy that will resonate through the hearts of those who knew him.
Kenny was the cherished son of Clara Adams and Samuel Sheffield, who predeceased him, and he grew up in the vibrant community of Newark. He graduated from the Newark Public School System and furthered his education at Essex County College. Following his academic pursuits, Kenny answered the call of duty and served honorably in the United States Navy, a testament to his enduring spirit and commitment to his country.
In December 1973, Kenny married the love of his life, Catherine. Their union, which spanned 52 beautiful years, was a testament to their unwavering support and devotion to one another. Together, they raised two wonderful children, Malon (Lamont) Swinson and Khalid (Melissa) Sheffield, who, along with his beloved grandchildren Aliyah, Sayeed, Samaiya, Lamar, Camille, Kyan, Quinn, Omari, and Jayden, will continue to carry forward his legacy of love and passion.
Kenny embarked on a fulfilling career in construction, dedicating 25 years as a skilled sheet metal journeyman. Yet, it was his profound love for music that truly defined his essence. A protégé of the late jazz trumpet player Lee Morgan, Kenny's talent on the trumpet resonated throughout local jazz clubs in Newark and New York City. His musical journey led him to become a member of Gil Scott-Heron and The Midnight Band, during which he recorded several albums and toured the world from 1980 to 1983. His artistry also extended to playing with the Errol Parker Tenet band, where he recorded an album, leaving an indelible mark on the world of jazz.
Kenny's life was a harmonious blend of rhythm, dedication, and love. His presence was a melody of kindness and warmth, resonating with everyone who had the privilege to know him. Though his passing leaves a void, his spirit will forever be felt in the gentle notes of a jazz trumpet and the loving memories shared by his family and friends.
A private funeral ceremony will be held to honor Kenny's life and legacy, respecting the wishes of his family. In lieu of flowers, the family kindly requests that donations be made in Kenny's name to support budding musicians in the Newark community, ensuring that his passion for music continues to inspire future generations.
Kenny Sheffield's life was a symphony of love and talent, and while the world is a quieter place without him, his music will play on in the hearts of those he touched.
