Obituary of Kenneth George Schilling
It is with heavy hearts and profound gratitude for a life well-lived, that we announce the passing of Kenneth George Schilling, a beloved husband, father, grandfather, and friend. Born on March 21, 1944, in the vibrant city of Manhattan, New York, Ken departed this world on June 27, 2026, at the age of 82. He left us peacefully at home, enveloped in the love and care of his devoted wife, Laura, and cherished youngest daughter.
The son of Richard and Anna Schilling, Ken was raised with the values of integrity and resilience, qualities that he embodied throughout his life. Predeceased by his parents, his brother Roger Schilling, and his sister Carol Sneddon, Ken now joins them in eternal rest.
Ken's journey was marked by courage and devotion, both to his country and his family. On July 11, 1966, he enlisted in the United States Navy as a Seabee, bravely serving in Vietnam. His time in the military was characterized by remarkable bravery. Trapped behind enemy lines for 30 harrowing days and wounded in action, Ken returned home with a steadfast spirit and a deep appreciation for life's precious moments.
Upon his return, Ken pursued business studies at Oregon State, laying the groundwork for a successful career as a salesman. His mantra, "Always Be Closing," guided him through decades in the home improvement, roofing, solar, and home security industries. His professional life was defined not just by achievements and accolades, but by the lasting relationships he forged along the way.
In 1977, Ken found his greatest partner in life, marrying Laura Joey on January 15th in Freehold, NJ. Together, they built a family and a legacy of love over 50 wonderful years. Their union was blessed with four children: Monica Marchitelli, Lisa Hornback, Sabrina Routon, and Jason Schilling, who carry forward the values and wisdom instilled by their father.
Ken's five grandchildren—Justin Schilling, Mark Marchitelli, Gavin Rogers, Krystal Routon, and Saylor Rohr—were his pride and joy. He delighted in every moment spent with them, sharing his passions and his humor, ensuring they felt cherished and loved.
A lover of the sea, Ken found peace and happiness on the water, whether deep-sea fishing or enjoying leisurely days on Washington's lakes with his family. His favorite shirt humorously boasted, "The wife loves me, the fish fear me," capturing the essence of his playful spirit. The music of Bob Seger and Neil Diamond often accompanied him on long drives, as he savored life's simple pleasures.
Ken had a knack for making those around him feel valued. Whether entertaining with stories, preparing a beloved meal, or simply enjoying a backyard evening feeding squirrels, his presence was a gift. His analytical mind, coupled with a touch of sarcasm, made him a keen observer of life's nuances, always eager to see others enjoy themselves.
To his family, Ken leaves behind a legacy not of material wealth, but of love, laughter, and cherished memories. His generosity and unwavering devotion to those he loved will forever resonate in the hearts of those fortunate enough to have known him.
As we mourn the loss of Kenneth George Schilling, we celebrate the richness of his life and the indelible mark he left on our hearts. In the words of his family, "A man's greatest legacy is not what he leaves behind for his family, but what he leaves within them."
A memorial service will be held to honor Ken's life and service. We invite all who knew him to join us in remembering a truly remarkable man, whose love was as boundless as the sea he so adored.
Rest in peace, Ken. You are deeply missed, yet your spirit sails on in every heart you touched.
