Kathryn L. Shively Hurston, a beloved mother, grandmother, great-grandmother, and cherished friend to many, peacefully passed away on August 1, 2026. Born on January 18, 1938, in Campbellsville, Kentucky, Kathryn was the treasured daughter of Finis and Sue Shively.
Kathryn shared a remarkable journey with her late husband, David L. Hurston Jr., whom she married in 1958 in Indiana. Together, they cultivated a life brimming with joy and affection, raising their family with unwavering devotion. David and Kathryn enjoyed many wonderful years together until his passing, creating a home that was always filled with warmth and laughter.
A lifelong learner, Kathryn graduated from Arsenal Technical High School and pursued her passion for nursing at Butler University, completing two years in the School of Practical Nursing. Her professional life was marked by dedication and service, as she served as the Secretary of the Grandview Civic Center for many years, leaving an indelible mark on her community.
Kathryn's artistic talents shone through her love of quilting, and she was an esteemed member of the Quilter's Guild of Indianapolis. Her quilts, crafted with love and skill, were treasured by all who received them. Beyond her artistic endeavors, Kathryn was a dedicated member of St. John Missionary Baptist Church for over 50 years, where her faith and commitment were an inspiration to her fellow parishioners.
Standing at just 4'9", Kathryn was a petite woman with a mighty presence. Her gracious spirit and intelligent demeanor were evident to all who met her. She had a remarkable ability to make everyone feel at home, offering both spiritual nourishment and delightful meals to those who visited her. Her garden was a testament to her love of nature, and her baking brought joy to family and friends alike.
Predeceased by her beloved parents, Finis and Sue Shively, as well as David Hurston and Joyce Hurston, Kathryn leaves behind her cherished children, Terry and Mark Hurston. Her legacy lives on through her 11 grandchildren and 17 great-grandchildren, who will continue to celebrate her life and carry forward her values of love and kindness.
