Kathryn Ellora Counce Black, known fondly as Kathy by her family and friends, passed away peacefully on May 14, 2026, at the age of 68. Born on December 14, 1957, in Memphis, Kathy graced the world with a presence that was as warm as it was inspiring.
Kathy was the cherished daughter of the late Dr. D. Shelby Counce and Christine Daniel Counce, who predeceased her. She was also preceded in death by her beloved brother, Dan Counce who shared with her a childhood filled with wonderful memories. Her legacy is lovingly carried forward by her children, daughter Shelby C. Black of Brooklyn, New York, and son Daniel C. Black of Starkville, Mississippi, who were the pride and joy of her life. Kathy is also survived by her sister, Nancy Counce Gordon, and her husband Kimbal, of Memphis, along with her nieces.
A graduate of Overton High School in Memphis, Kathy's academic journey took her to the University of Denver, where she earned her undergraduate degree. Her professional life began in her hometown, where she built a successful career in media sales. Kathy had a remarkable ability to connect with people, forming friendships that lasted a lifetime. Her career took a compassionate turn when she pursued a Master’s Degree in Psychology, dedicating her later years to working in the mental health and addiction fields with various healthcare companies and hospitals. Her work in this area was a testament to her deep empathy and commitment to helping others.
Kathy's life was characterized by her witty humor and unyielding kindness. She had an innate ability to bring laughter into any room and a warmth that made everyone feel seen and valued. Her humor was a beacon of light, lifting the spirits of those fortunate enough to be in her presence. Kathy's kindness knew no bounds, and her ability to listen and offer support made her a beloved confidant to many.
After suffering a stroke on February 4, 2026, Kathy faced a lengthy hospitalization with resilience. She spent her final days at Methodist Hospice Residence. Though her passing leaves a profound void, her spirit lives on in the memories she created with those who loved her.
To honor Kathy's life and her wishes, a private memorial service will be held. In lieu of flowers, the family kindly requests donations be made to a charity of your choice in Kathy’s memory, continuing her legacy of kindness and generosity.
Kathy's life was a tapestry of love, laughter, and compassion. As we bid farewell, we are reminded of the profound impact one life can have on so many. May her memory be a blessing to all who knew her.
