It is with heavy hearts and profound gratitude for a life well-lived that we announce the passing of Kathleen "Kathy" Fjetland, who departed this world peacefully on February 15, 2026. Kathy, a cherished sister, aunt, and friend, was born on April 20, 1949, in the vibrant city of San Francisco, California. Her life was a testament to kindness, creativity, and intelligence, and she leaves behind a legacy of love and warmth that will be remembered by all who knew her. Kathy was the beloved daughter of the late William James Dearden and Sheila Cox Dearden, who instilled in her a passion for learning and a love of nature. She was also predeceased by her devoted husband, Stephen Fjetland, whom she married on August 22, 1992, and with whom she shared a beautiful life until his passing in December 2022. Together, they created a world filled with love, laughter, and mutual respect. A graduate of the University of Colorado - Boulder, Kathy earned a bachelor's degree in anthropology, a field that fueled her curiosity and deepened her appreciation for the world around her. Her professional journey led her to careers at Shell and Chevron, where she demonstrated remarkable skill and dedication. Kathy's meticulous attention to detail was evident in her work, as she spent countless hours inspecting samples under a microscope and crafting detailed reports. Her commitment to excellence even took her to an oil rig, where she conducted vital research, embodying the spirit of adventure and discovery that defined her life. Beyond her professional achievements, Kathy was known for her profound love of animals and plants. Her home was a sanctuary for a variety of beloved pets and flourishing greenery, each a testament to her nurturing spirit. Her favorite color, blue, was a reflection of her serene and thoughtful nature, bringing a sense of calm and beauty to those around her. Kathy was a cherished sister to her surviving brother, Henry Dearden, and a loving aunt to numerous nieces and nephews, whom she adored and inspired. Her family and friends were the beneficiaries of her boundless generosity and unwavering support, her presence a constant source of comfort and joy. Though we mourn the loss of Kathy, we also celebrate the extraordinary life she lived—a life filled with love, learning, and compassion. In accordance with her wishes, a private ceremony will be held to honor her memory. As we bid farewell to our dear Kathy, we carry with us the lessons she taught us: to approach life with curiosity, to cherish the natural world, and to live with kindness and creativity. In lieu of flowers, the family requests that donations be made in Kathy's memory to a local animal shelter or botanical garden, continuing her legacy of care and love for all living things.
