Obituary
Katherine, a beloved mother, grandmother, sister, aunt, and friend, left this world peacefully on September 15, 2026. Born on August 31, 1952, in the gentle embrace of Montgomery, Alabama, and took her final breaths in New York City where she lived for over half her life.
Katherine brought warmth and kindness to everyone she met throughout her life.
Katherine was a nurturing and devoted mother to her daughter, Kassie Johnson, and a proud grandmother to Brandon Johnson, who was the apple of her eye. Her love and care extended beyond her immediate family, as she leaves to mourn her two cherished sisters Bettye Winfield Brown, Sandra Blake, and Caton Jennings. Katherine's influence and love were also felt deeply by her nieces, Chloe Orgill, Celeste Winfield, Deirdre Winfield Stokes, Taylor Stewart, and Chantal Orgill, and her nephews, Carlton Tillman and Brendan Brown.
Katherine's life was a testament to her resilient spirit and unwavering dedication to her family and community. Her warmth and laughter could light up any room, and her kindness was a balm to all who knew her. She was a guiding light whose wisdom and compassion left an indelible mark on everyone fortunate enough to be in her presence. She was a caregiver with a nurturing spirit. She relocated from New York City to Atlanta GA 20 years ago to care for her elderly Mom fondly referred to as TwoMommy, later her two brothers Don and Harold and her husband Ben each who preceded her death. She spent her last year caring for her eldest sister Bettye diagnosed with Alzheimer's, glaucoma and heart disease. A year ago she relocated once again and returned to New York to assist her great niece suffering from epilepsy as she recovered from a hip replacement.
A private memorial service to honor Katherine's life will be held at a later date for family and a few close friends whose lives were touched by Katherine. We look forward celebrating the beautiful legacy she leaves behind.
In lieu of flowers, the family kindly requests that donations be made anonymously in honor of her loved ones to the African American Alzheimer's and Wellness Association,The Michael J Fox Foundation and The American Cancer Society; organizations that were close to her heart.
Katherine's departure leaves a void that will be felt deeply by those who loved her, but her spirit will continue to live on in the hearts of her family and friends. May her memory be a blessing to all who knew her.
