Karl Reisner

It is with heavy hearts that we announce the passing of Karl Reisner, a beloved educator, coach, and community stalwart, who left us on July 21, 2026, at the age of 77. Born on June 3, 1949, in Allentown, Pennsylvania, Karl was the cherished son of Frank and Betty Jane Reisner, now reunited with them and his dear wife, Stephanie, who predeceased him. Karl and Stephanie's love story began in June of 1973, marking the start of a remarkable 44-year marriage filled with love, friendship, and unwavering devotion. Together, they built a life rooted in family and community, raising two wonderful children, Kristopher and Amanda. Karl's legacy lives on through them, his daughter-in-law Juanita, and his adored grandchildren, Alex, Amelia, and Matthew, who were his pride and joy. His brother Fritz, along with his wife Lisa, also survive him, along with countless friends and former students whose lives he touched. An accomplished scholar, Karl graduated from The Hill School in Pottstown before earning degrees from both the University of Pennsylvania and Lehigh University. His passion for education and mentorship found a home at Mercersburg Academy, where he dedicated 44 years to teaching history and English. His impact on students was profound, forging relationships that endured long after they left his classroom. Karl's influence was so significant that two former students, Brooke Kinney and Lacy Rice, established a scholarship fund in his name, a testament to his lasting impact in education. Beyond the classroom, Karl was a celebrated coach of the wrestling, football, and baseball teams with whom he won numerous state and league titles. His dedication to sports extended to Mercersburg's youth, where he volunteered as a baseball coach and was an active member of the community. Karl's service and devotion to Mercersburg were recognized with the prestigious Buchanan Award, honoring his years of commitment to the town and its residents. Karl's involvement in the community was wide-ranging, from his membership in the Rotary Club to his leadership as church council president at St. John's Lutheran Church. He participated in Santa's Toy Box, bringing joy to children year after year. Among his many passions, Karl loved sports, Motown music, and golfing. His dancing skills and infectious zest for life were legendary, especially during joyful evenings at Stoner's on the Square. Known for his boundless energy and quick wit, Karl was famous for his "joke of the day," brightening the lives of everyone around him with his sense of humor and dad jokes. His smile and energetic spirit will be fondly remembered and deeply missed by all who knew him. A service to honor Karl's life will be held on August 8, 2026, at 11:00 a.m. in the Mercersburg Academy Chapel, located at 300 East Seminary St., Mercersburg, PA. The family extends their heartfelt gratitude to the dedicated staff of the memory care wing at Sancerre in Richmond, Virginia, and the compassionate nurses and caregivers from Suncrest Hospice, who made Karl's final days as peaceful as possible. His legacy of love, laughter, and service will continue to inspire all who were fortunate to know him.
