In Loving Memory

Karl Groninger
February 26, 1961 — June 25, 2026
It is with heavy hearts and profound sadness that we announce the passing of Karl J. Groninger, a devoted husband, father, grandfather, brother, and friend, who left this world peacefully on June 25, 2026, at the age of 65. Karl, a native of Newark, NJ, was born on February 26, 1961, to Bernard and Karolina Groninger. He was a beacon of strength and resilience, embodying the true spirit of a warrior, as he courageously battled cancer for two years, surrounded by the love and care of his family.
Karl's journey through life was marked by a series of remarkable achievements and unwavering dedication to service. He graduated from Toms River High School North in 1979 and later earned a Bachelor of Science degree from Excelsior College in 2002, a testament to his lifelong commitment to learning and personal growth.
In August 1982, Karl embarked on a distinguished 33-year career in the United States Army, where he achieved the rank of Command Sergeant Major of the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers in 2012. His military service was characterized by exemplary leadership, integrity, and patriotism, values that were deeply instilled in him by his beloved parents, Bernard and Karolina, who predeceased him.
Karl's transition to civilian life in 2015 saw him join Melwood, where he continued to inspire and lead with the same fervor and dedication. His 11-year tenure at Melwood was marked by transformative growth and a commitment to inclusion, leaving an indelible mark on the organization and the disability community. Karl's legacy of opportunity and belonging continues to resonate with all those whose lives he touched.
Beyond his professional achievements, Karl was a man of simple pleasures and profound connections. He cherished his time outdoors, enjoying the freedom of the open road on his Harley-Davidson, the tranquility of hiking, and the joy of music. His family was the cornerstone of his life, and he treasured every moment spent with them, especially his wife of 45 years, Vicky, whom he married in September 1980 in Toms River, NJ.
Karl is survived by his loving wife Vicky, his devoted children Jillian Fiedler (Shannon) and Timothy Groninger (Kevin Gardner), his brother Bernard Groninger, and his cherished grandchildren Cheyenne Aubin (Memphis) and Timothy Young. His legacy lives on in the hearts of those who knew him.
In honoring Karl’s life, we celebrate not only his accomplishments but also his love for family and friends, his infectious laughter, and the warmth he brought to every gathering. Karl's memory will be forever cherished, and his spirit will continue to guide and inspire those he left behind.
In lieu of flowers, the family kindly requests that donations be made to Melwood, an organization that held a special place in Karl's heart and exemplifies the values he lived by every day.
Rest in peace, dear Karl. Your life was a testament to love, service, and resilience, and your legacy will continue to shine brightly in the hearts of all who were fortunate enough to know you.
