Karl passed away peacefully on July 8, 2026, at the age of 96, surrounded by his loving family at Holly Brooke assisted living facility. His life was a beautiful tapestry of love, service, and dedication, leaving an indelible mark on all who knew him. Born on May 11, 1930, in Millstadt, Illinois, Karl was the cherished son of Harry and Viola (Ola) Bangert. He grew up in a close-knit family, alongside his brothers James and Harry Jr. (Tony) Bangert, who predeceased him. He graduated from Belleville Township High School, where he began to form the values of hard work and community service that would define his life. Karl proudly served his country as a member of the Navy during the Korean War, where he was stationed aboard an aircraft carrier. His dedication to service was a testament to his unwavering patriotism and commitment to protecting the freedoms of others. Following his military service, Karl built a successful career as a plasterer with George Weis Plastering Company, where he was a respected member of the Plasterers and Cement Finishers Local 90 for an impressive 70 years. His craftsmanship and work ethic were renowned, and he took great pride in contributing to the beauty and structure of numerous buildings. Karl was a man of many passions. He found joy in the simple pleasures of life, whether it was fishing at Bobby Quirin’s farm pond, playing cards with his poker buddies, tending to his small garden and flowers, or feeding the birds and squirrels. He was also an avid wood carver, sharing his talents with the Midwest Wood Carvers community. An active member of the Millstadt Fire Department, the VFW, and the American Legion, Karl's dedication to service extended beyond his professional life. He was a pillar of his community, always ready to lend a helping hand and support those in need. Karl was predeceased by his first wife, Nanette Bangert née Sandlin, with whom he shared many happy years. He leaves behind a loving family, including his devoted wife, Dorthy Bangert née Jablonski, and his children: Michael and Karen Bangert, Karla and David Howard, Mary Elizabeth Grau (Lisa), and Lori Lynn Clark. He is also survived by his cherished step-sisters Debbie Hull, Patti Boeckmann, and Joan and Greg Keltner. His legacy continues through his grandchildren: David Paul Howard, Julie Collins, Jennifer and Steve Swiney, Heather and Jordon Christie, Clarissa and Austin Wilson, Zach Clark, Jason Grau, Jacob Grau, Joseph (Joey) and Brooke Grau, Andrew Ehret, Amy Ehret, Katie and Michael Huffman, Blair Keltner and TJ Tennison, Hillary Keltner and Quinn Martinez, and Riley Keltner. The family extends their deepest gratitude to the staff at Holly Brooke and the hospice nurses, Nicole and Michele, as well as VA caregiver Paula, for their kind and compassionate care during Karl's final days. In accordance with his wishes, a private funeral ceremony will be held to honor Karl's remarkable life. The family kindly requests that in lieu of flowers, donations be made in Karl's memory to a charity of your choice. Karl Bangert lived a life full of love, laughter, and service. He will be deeply missed, yet forever remembered by all whose lives he touched. May he rest in eternal peace.
